The year 2019 was fruitful for app developers and companies as per the latest report by Sensor Tower. During the past twelve months, downloads grew 9.1% to 114.9 billion, with 30.6 billion of them on the App Store and 84.3 billion from Google Play.

WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram still occupied four of the Top 5 spots, but this time TikTok jumped from fourth in 2018 to second in 2019 due to its popularity in markets like India, United States, and Brazil.

The report pays special attention to Q4 2019, which is between October 1 and December 31, 2019. During that period, Call of Duty was the most desired game, with over 180 million downloads. Second-placed game Sand Balls got half as many.

Looking at downloads from Apple devices, half of the CoD downloads were from the App Store, where Mario Kart Tour is second with just 25 million, less than a third of the downloads for the newly released shooter.

Sensor Tower revealed the biggest surprise was the launch of Disney+ - it was launched on November 12, but quickly rose to 9th place for Q4 2019 on the App Store. It was also the top downloaded app in the US during that period with 31 million downloads - more than double the total of TikTok, which was in second.

The revenue from TikTok grew 540% yearly, but most of that comes from China, where the app also offers in-app purchases of whatever people are selling or influencing. To put this in numbers, the revenue was $40 million by December 2019, putting ByteDance’s app on the 7th non-game spot by revenue for the last month of the year.
