Smartphones are ruling in terms of global web traffic, with a new report today revealing that 64% of all of it actually comes from smartphones. This isn't a huge surprise, of course, given how prevalent smartphones have become and how, if you have one, it's very likely to be the main device with which you browse the web, but at least we now have an actual percentage to speak about.

The shift from desktops and laptops to smartphones is an ongoing digital trend now, and mobile web traffic has steadily increased since mid-2023. There have been ebbs and flows but overall, as you can see below, since Q1 2015 to today, the trend has clearly been upward. 64% of all web traffic is a new record, by the way, with the previous one of 62.71% being achieved last quarter. In fact, there have been eight consecutive quarters of growth for mobile web traffic as a share of the total.

Smartphones dominate global web traffic, here's by how much

Regionally, Asia leads the way with 71.3% of the total web traffic there being mobile, while in the Americas and Europe the number is around 50% - so the global dominance of mobile web traffic can basically be attributed to Asia's preference for it.

If we look at the distribution of that mobile traffic through the OS lens, Android obviously dominates, as you'd expect given its market share in smartphone sales, with 72.72% of it, while iOS has 26.92%.

Then why mentioned on different sides with different values and why the lines are coloured and what does that mean? It seems this data is provided by Apple just like their comparison graphs for performance of their devices.
