Sony Ericsson at MWC 2010: XPERIA and Vivaz go pro

Sony Ericsson Android Symbian Touch UI MWC 2010

The MWC has begun - for Sony Ericsson at least. They’ve got three new phones and they’re just itching to tell us all about them. The X10 mini and the X10 mini pro are two new entries in the XPERIA line. And there’s a brand new 720p video capturing Vivaz complete with a QWERTY keyboard. That would be the Vivaz pro.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini and X10 mini pro

First up are the minified versions of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 - the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini and the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini pro.

Both phones are Android handsets, which feature Timescape – the home-brewed UI that brings together all the various communication channels into one. The Android version on the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini and X10 mini pro is 1.6 and don’t worry - despite the modifications you still get full access to the Android Market.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini and the XPERIA X10 mini pro pack many of the same features, with the difference that the X10 mini is a touchscreen bar, while the X10 mini pro flaunts a QWERTY keyboard that slides out of its tiny body.

Here come the basic specs of the XPERIA minis - a 2.55” TFT scratch-resistant touchscreen of QVGA resolution, a 600MHz Qualcomm CPU, 5MP camera with auto focus and geotagging.

On the wireless side of connectivity there’s quad-band GSM/EDGE and dual-band HSDPA and HSUPA. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS with A-GPS are also part of the deal. There’s also a microUSB port, microSD card slot for cards up to 16GB, 2GB card in the box and finally, a 3.5 mm audio jack.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini quite lives up to its name with tiny dimensions - 83 x 50 x 16 mm and 88 grams. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini pro on the other hand is a bit thicker due to its QWERTY keyboard, but still very tiny, especially by QWERTY phone standards. The X10 mini pro measures 90 x 52 x 17 mm and weighs the not so teeny 120 grams.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini will be available in Black Pearl, White Lime, Pink and Red Silver, while the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini pro will come in the more discreet Black and Red color versions.

Both the X10 mini and the X10 mini pro will be available in the second quarter of 2010 in select markets.

Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro

There’s another pro from Sony Ericsson - the Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro, or Sony Ericsson Kanna as it was known in first leaks. As the name suggests, the Vivaz pro is like the Sony Ericsson Vivaz but with a QWERTY keyboard.

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro packs the defining feature of the first Vivaz - the 720p video recording, though this time the camera is only 5-megapixel. The camera also offers auto focus for still images and continuous focus for videos, face and smile detection, image stabilization, geo-tagging and touch capture.

It’s impressive that the Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro, despite growing a whole QWERTY keyboard is just 2 mm thicker than the regular Vivaz - the exact dimensions are 109 x 52 x 15 mm and 117 grams.

The screen is 3.2” of nHD resolution and scratch-resistant surface. With the Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro you still get the generous 8GB microSD card in the package, the speedy 720MHz CPU, the revamped Symbian S60 5th edition, the whole deal.

As a quick reminder - the Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro packs quad-band GSM/EDGE and tri-band HSDPA/HSUPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS with Wisepilot navigation software preinstalled, Quickoffice, Twitter and Facebook integration to name a few.

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro will be available in two colors - Black and White - and is expected to hit the market in the second quarter of this year. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 is coming in March, so the Vivaz pro, the X10 mini and the X10 mini pro should be next in line.
