thank you so much for responding fast! now i know the real problem of P990 is the memory management. i think the RAM should have doubled in the next P-series because the OS itself requires more memory because of the graphics animation in menu(SVG which makes this OS like no other). but the firmware R9 did improve very well as i heard from all UIQ 3 phone threads. if there's only way to upgrade the RAM of the SE UIQ 3 phones just like PCs lol! but now i think SE already knew the problems and hope they will improve later the RAM, processor and OS in their new walkman, cybershot messenger and PDA series UIQ phones.
thanks a lot!

the firmware update will be necessary if bugs are encountered. but if you read the rest of the postings here using the R9 firmware version. the feedbacks are positive. it depends upon your decision. but bear in mind that this is OS powered. so expect same problems as any other smartphones do. even PCs in fact. but in firmware updates the problems are resolved 90%...
after owning a SE W800 and nw W900 i feel lyk P990 would be a great upgrade but im put-off by everyones firmware complaints

Hi everyone,im currently using the great SonyEricsson W900 and thinking of getting this beautiful beast P990, what i want to know is at what resolution does the P990 record videos and also at what frame rate does it record the videos at? this looks like a beautiful phone and its got UIQ3.0 which is wat i want, BUT if this phone doesnt meet my requirments il be forced to get a NOKIA N73 or N93i and im slowly leaning to NOKIA everyday

You can edit and write new Word doc. No problem. You can also make a new Quicksheet doc. But Powerpoint - NO.

The latest software of P990 R9 etc. makes the phone very stable. Through all the time with the phone after upgrade (1,5 months) I did not encounter any software bugs exept one: when I recorded video and wanted to RENAME it in the TASK MANAGER, the phone rebooted. Very strange! But when I did it again and wanted to watch, rename or move/copy the video through the Multimedia Player - NO PROBLEM at all.
With all other actions I did not have any software problems. I do A LOT with P990. So: extensive mailing, video, photo, some mp3 downloads, radio, A LOT of internet browsing with 2 browsers - Opera mini and preinstalled Opera 8, calendar, writing and reading a lot of WORD files, Pdf+ - almost everything. Preinstalled Opera is really great when you have 3G. I use 3G when possible - any big city, makes internet SUPERFAST.
Ok, so it's all PROS.
CONS? Yes - the RAM management. So, when you use all the apps, RAM slowly goes down from 16 to about 9MB. So it's great to turn off and on again the phone once for two days, that's enough. Swiss manager (free version) does not really help. The effect? If the website is too large, it can close the browser. No problem with coming back... The other thing I don't like is the management of files attached in the incoming mail. In P990 you have to OPEN the file than SAVE it. In P910 you could directly SAVE the file, without need of opening it. So it's not a big deal with normal attachements, like image or txt up to 50Kb. Bit when it is really BIG like 80 pages in Word - P990 cannot pararerly open the Messages and Office to read such a big file. In P910 I could save it and than open - no need to open two apps together...
Beside that the phone is GREAT and really practical, probably one of the very very best on the market. The only real phone to compare is Nokia Communicator series, but it's different. Maybe also some HTC...
P.S. It is funny that Swiss Manager says that P990 has 16000 K colours, so it is 16 million... But everywhere it says it has 262 K! I don't know...

The phone with R9 is NOT slow, it is actually very FAST. In many ways it is faster than my beloved P910, pdf is great now. Email is much much faster.
The internal keyboard is not for dialing - click the PHONE icon in the flip open mode and you have the phone mode!
how should be the internal full keyboard of the phone be used for dialing
the phone r9 is not slow but pls buy from the sony original dealer or else you will find the problems listed bellow get the phone with sony bill this is a grt phone
hey everyone i am just wordering is this phone really slow ,ppl says it lags alot compare to the old p series. its kind of slow.. is that true
I have tried dearly to love this stylish looking smartphone for the past 3 months. I am now on my third Symbian operating system and am giving the phone up tomorrow. It is simply the least stable product I have ever encountered, featuring the following random behaviour;
> calls cannot be answered, the 'phone just "freezes" and continues to ring!
> incoming SMS will lock up the phone if a call arives during this time.
> setting up WLAN and Internet accounts simply made it worse in terms of stability. It would sometimes just go to a white screen and flash !
> Very poor battery longevity.
> Lots of bugs in the address book software catalogue, Symbian clearly did not accurately copy earlier data dictionaries and the 'phone can dump contact data into the most unexpected places.
> camera is prone to swithing into video mode, it is then almost impossible to save/edit/send MMS files.
Bottom line - avoid this at all costs. I suspect it is almost all down to Symbian as the hardware engineering quality looks good.
