Drama, 26 Jun 2009Hi Ray, thanks for your comments. Is it better (cheaper) to download spbshell2, then immedi... moreHi Drama,

Glad my feedback was of some use to you.

Well on SPB's site, it says that if you have one of their softwares as an OEM product on your device, you would be eligible for a 50% discount towards an upgrade. This is the case for X1 - we get SPB Mobile Shell 2 from Sony Ericsson for free. SPB need you to send in your mobile's Make/Model, IMEI number and purchase date. Once they have all the details, they'd send you a personal discount code using which you can get the license key for half the price.

All I can say is that the new version is really nice and certainly worth the $30 pricetag. And now for $15 for us X1 users, it's a must-have. BTW, it also works great in the landscape mode.

And oh, one other thing. I don't think you need to have Mobile Shell 2.0 installed before you install 3.0. You can directly install 3.0. When I installed 3.0 on my phone, it clearly said that 2.0 will be removed before 3.0 can be installed. And the Mobile Shell panel is also gone.

Anyway, give that a go.

thanks for your comments. Is it better (cheaper) to download spbshell2, then immediately download spbshell3 as an upgrade? And then you remove spbshell2 I guess?

Guys, it had been a while since I tried some new software on my phone. Checked out SPB's site, and not surprisingly there were a few that I thought I could try.

First, of course, we all know that SPB has launched version 3.0 of their Mobile Shell. I mostly used standard Winmo Today panel because of the quick access to all of Fring, IM+, Windows Live, Skype, pRSSreader, email/sms, calendar among others. I used the other panels only off and on. There were a few videos on Youtube of the Mobile Shell 3.0, and it looked nice and impressive. So I thought I'd give it a try and upgraded mine about a week back. And wow, I haven't had any other panel on since then. Yes, as someone pointed out before, the new 3.0 is not a panel by itself like version 2.0 was, but it's just two clicks away from your standard Winmo Today screen (and back in one click - the right soft key maps to "SPB Home"). And the whole thing is a delightful experience, with no lags. And I think it shields the underlying Winmo interface to a greater extent, making many things more finger-friendly.

I have tried TouchFlo3D before. It's also quite nice, but made my phone a bit unstable, plus there were some other minor issues with it. I tried PointUI Home2 - nice and simple, but very limited things on offer. The SPB 2.0 was alright, but not much fun. But this new version is just great. Very smooth animation and swipe gestures work really well. The best part is that the "lifestyle" screens are totally customizable - you can add/remove "widgets" - u can have apps, contacts, media control, wireless manager, indicators for backlight/battery, weather, time, calendar, messages, etc. Plus what's more, you can change the size and location of the widget on your screen. That is absolutely awesome. I would totally recommend it to anyone with a touchscreen Winmo phone.

Alright, now the next software that I tried is called SPB Online. Check out its video/reviews on Youtube and/or SPB. This combines SPB TV and SPB Weather, and a few other things. Basically allows you to read RSS, play some games online, and listen to online radio channels, and even better - watch streaming TV over your wifi or 3G/HSDPA network. It's pretty cool I thought. For an 8mb download, I thought it was quite a lot of things in one package.

Well besides these two softwares from SPB, I have been using SPB Backup, which takes regular backups of my phone and syncs it to my laptop. Would be really useful if I ever loose or break my phone (I hope not) and get a replacement. But it was also useful when I upgraded my ROM to R2 a few weeks back.

I thing SPB are doing pretty good job in bringing out some nice useful apps for smartphones. Hope my feedback is of help to some people out there thinking to try these softwares. Anyway, ciao.

vinodh, 24 Jun 2009The sony erricson X1 is all waste i would recommend people to go for the new nokia N75 rather ... moreVinodh, are you seriously comparing a phone that has no touchscreen, no QWERTY keyboard, no wifi, no HSDPA, no GPS, no 3.5mm audio jack, a 220MHz processor, and looks horrible with the brilliant X1? You must really be joking.

Or maybe you can't get your favourite Nokia phone's model number right. That clearly shows how much you like your phone & how much you know about your phone.

Another classic case of "sour grapes".

Dear SE,
i used to be a SE fan, now i am a Nokia fan.
the N97 is in the market now, i would very much want to get back on the SE train but i need a great business phone.
the X1 was very bad for me. if you can match the Nokia N97 specs then i will come one board.

Yes, mstL is anywhere in SE phones. Go to SE Satio forum and you see his cut and paste comment attacking SE phones. As I have posted in SE Satio, this guy mstL is just sourgrapping because his NOKA N97 is a big, big flop in Saudi Arabia, hahahaha. Everybody is waiting for the monster SE Satio which I would say a perfect phone for me.

I agree it is a no waste of money - actually it is a no waste of time!

I got it free but I had no return it!

1: the battery was great

2: the reception was great

The software is still great.

If you can get it for free . TRY it!

or get a good no return policy!

I think it is totally greatd and a reliable model!

@uEAu - If we are talking about handling with care our phone, I took care of all my cellphones to the highest level especially my XPERIA X1. I never place any of my phones even on a soft hardwood but I have a soft (really soft) velvet cloth where I always put my cellphones on. But unfortunately, my X1 battery cover is not really good. Just after I bought a couple of weeks, flaking starts (as I have said on my previous post), 3 little areas peeled-off but really noticeable. My P990i, for 3 years, you cannot find even a little scratch on it. That's how I take care of my phones (especially SE phones). I really love my X1, but little disappointed with the battery cover.
