Got mine delivered via Vodafone UK today.
I already have a Tytn 2 and was looking forward to increasing my enjoyment of WinMobile 6.1 over my Tytn.

Firstly, the screen is beautiful. Windows mobile has never looked so good. But there lies the rub. Windows mobile (despite the implementation of the panes) is still there underneath the new eye candy. Once you drop back into the WinMobile interface the phone almost demands you get the stylus out. Due to the incredible resolution of the screen, the fonts are small and the on-screen keyboard takes some concentration to 'type' quickly. I use my Tytn 2 alot on the road and especially for getting traffic updates whilst stationary on the motorway. The Xperia screen makes using the browser very difficult in this scenario. Yes, I know I could increase the font size, but the main reason you have a hi-res screen is to improve browsing real estate. You would almost need to increase fonts for different uses.

Secondly the keyboard. I apologise for comparing the Xperia to the Tytn 2, but I really didn't like the Xperia keyboard. The buttons don't seem to have that positive push that you get with the Tytn2. Also there is a lack of cursor keys on the keyboard which I missed. I found when using the top row of keys that my fingers wold knock the bottom of the screen. While not a great problem, it somehow distracted me and interrupted my typing flow. This is something I don't get with the Tytn2.

The camera was a bit of a disappointment. It was slow to take (i.e. delay between pressing the button and the exposure) and I couldn't find a way of defaulting the still camera to use the flash in low light. Maybe I missed this setting, but I had to manually turn the 'light' on before the camera would flash indoors.

The video capture was excellent 640x480x30fps. This was impressive.

So, after spending some time with the Xperia what are my thoughts. Well, while I'm a fan of all things Sony Ericsson and despite the fact that they have tried their best to hide the poor WinMoble interface with some beautiful 'panes', it wasn't different enough for me to commit to a new contract (whilst still paying off my Tytn2 contract!).

It is therefore boxed up and ready to go back.

Thanks for reading..

Don't get me wrong but your Mom and Dad had quite big sense of humor to give you that name..:)

Symbian could be a market leader but why more and more phone producers are going away and chose another OS? ...not only WM but Mac, Android, BlackBerry...

Pls adv what stuff (stones, steel, foods, water...) you throw at your N96 as well as pls name the things it can do MORE than the X1...if you convince me i can consider take N96 instead of X1 or iPhone or HTC or BlackBerry...

Pls ask your friend to comment how he feels with his X1, will be helpful to all of us.

Brgds / Nicky

They can put their logo on the device put a start up screen on and have homepage for example set to their own portal thats fine by me "but" most mess with the software causing more problems that sony/nokia/3rd partys have to work thru to get it working,,just leave alone alltogether please operaters except for above on homepage etc

For me, if you have experience on formating/tweaking desktop computer, you'll find Windows Mobile more interesting particularly during custom ROM flashing. There's a lot of websites you can be refer for additional knowledge(xda-developers.com,modaco etc). Thus there is an advantage using WM compare to symbian. I've yet to see a symbian user cooking his own firmware!WM is more usable & flexible with a lot more QUALITY 3rd party software to use.

brynn, 11 Nov 2008The two go hand in hand,,poor signal = poor battery..If this is the case then it needs to addr... moreIt's actually a really great phone once one gets used to using it. The signal can be weak away from town or civilisation on O2. The camera isn't soo bad and I suspect that other than the 3.2mp it's a software deficiency. Really the phone has been let down in terms of software. The phone at the battery cover can warm-up but I don't know if this is due to the processor or constant connection to 3G etc -hence the big battery (I don't think it has anythign to do with the screen).

Can't believe all the tripe on this site. All I want is a review of the product from GSM arena. Or, Failing that I would like to see some REAL comments from people who have bought it.
It looks as though I'm goin to get it on o2 when my upgrade is due on 25th november, but trying to get info from people who have used it is a nightmare.

I just received thge phone today from t-mobile. I also sent it back today! Absolute junk! When is SONY-ERICSSON going to stop making child size phones?!?! Try getting a grip on the phone and you will find yourself looking at the camera ...again! This phone is also slow to get fom one program to another. I'm going with Nokia. They just seem to have gotten it right. I'll let you know about my N96 when I get it. Strangely nothing seems to compare to the ease of use of my trusty old N70. Dont know why.
