Dear ryk,

There is no confusion. But come on man, you know that most of the average users refers to the GPS as Maps!
When they ask about a GPS they mean a one that you can use for everything.

Most of the users are not advanced. So I think we should speak to people in a way that is simple. No need for confusing them and making the matter more complicated.

It's very good that you have some extra knowledge here, but you must realize that not all users will understand it, unless they have an accepted background in tech.

Thanks anyway and have a good one :)

some 15 year old, 29 Dec 2009i just bought an x1 off ebay for $650 au dollars. is this phones gps free? also what are some ... moreThe best way is to visit the xda developers website. You will find plenty stuff that will satisfy your needs and more.

Just take a good look at the forms and you will find apps that will turn your X1 into wonder land.

Also, regarding the GPS, as I mentioned before it is not free, and ofcourse I mean the GPS maps ;)
( so ryk won't be upset with my post this time)

So if you want to use it like nokia users do, you must have an internet connection.

Hope this helps and congratulations for the great phone ;).

Xperia X1 purchased in Nigeria works ok, but when this phone is taken to Asia then this is a real problem. Caller gets the Switched off message but the phone is ON. Just gets hanged. Not a problem of the Network as the same works well in Nokia. does anyone knows what is the reason. Upgraded the software still the problem remains the same.

Good to see your reply. After looking at it I think I wasn't clarifying enough in my previous post.

You said "...since the a-GPS is installed, the mobile will use it..." & "... it's not free if You want to use a decent GPS. On the other hand, the nokia has a free GPS that is much faster."

I think you are confusing GPS with GPS maps. These are two different things. You know what I think you can get a better answer here : http://asia.cnet.com/digitalliving/ask/0,3800004928,62052308,00.htm

Regards.

Thanks for the clarification. However, since the a-GPS is installed, the mobile will use it. Using the GPS alone will be really slow.

In this case, since most average users of the X1 will use their GPS, they will use the A-GPS. So I don't see anything wrong with my comment.

Yes it's not free if You want to use a decent GPS. On the other hand, the nokia has a free GPS that is much faster.

SE, 28 Dec 2009Yes it has a GPS but it's not free like what nokia offers. However, if you have a good data pl... moreSE you're wrong on this... (like most of your posts)
But, nonetheless

GPS chip in your mobile can also be called as GPS recievers i.e. they recieve signals from 24 satellite that orbit our planet.
To cut a long story short consider this, to interpret the signals the GPS reciever (on the whole i.e. hardware and software) need to know the location of each satellite. This data is called as " GPS ephemeris ". The reciever (in this case your phone) is capable of downloading "GPS ephemeris" directly from the satellite without any intervention from any network : GPRS, 2G, 3G, WiFi or even the network on which you make phone calls. So if you are stuck in a far removed place with no contact, your GPS reciever will be able to get your GPS position (provided you have battery life on your phone).

So what does A-GPS do? Well all it does is that this software downloads "GPS ephemeris" over the internet which is faster than downloading from the satellite directly. You can use 3G, WiFi, GPRS etc to get the data but the real work of tracking your movements is done by the GPS reciever in your phone.
So with the help of a software named A-GPS you have faster "lock" on the overhead satellite.

GPS is absolutely free..., A-GPS (Assisted GPS) since downloads data over internet you have to pay for the data charges which by the way is very small.

Anonymous, 28 Dec 2009Does the xperia 1 really have a gps because on it packaging box it say it entails assisted GPS.Yes it has a GPS but it's not free like what nokia offers. However, if you have a good data plan or wifi you can use it most of the time.

The X1 is a very good device, if your ok with windows mobile I recommend it.

The Sony Ericsson Service centre at Bangladesh took 3 months and yet could not solve the problem of data connectivity with PC of my X1. I think this is a spoil of money by purchasing a set with warranty from Bangladesh. And not it was found to be correct that sony ericsson does not have sufficient support people at Bangladesh.

some 15 year old, 25 Dec 2009what do people mean by the x1 panels cracking?Once and for all dude check this out :

http://xperia-x1.com/xperia-x1-showing-cracks/

And to Dark @ 2009-12-25 00:36
I agree that now-a-days you don't get 1 handset that has everything. That is probably because our needs have increased we want WinMo, Android, Multi touch input, Capacitive screen, as more as possible megapixel camera etc etc...all in one device. Its very important that we first identify our needs and then choose the best device that fits it.
And yes instead of going for X2, I say check for other handset that are similarly priced, particularly Nokia N900.
