People who are commenting 8+FRC as an 8bit should read this. True 10 bit or software 10 bit, both means 1 billion colours. That's what 10 bit actually means.
"Unfortunately the level of control of the polarizing crystals isn't quite enough to give 1024 orientations between 0 and 90 degrees. So panels use FRC to create in-between shades.. (Older panels couldn't even do 256 orientations., leading to 6-bit + FRC) . Using 8bit + FRC as an example, you want to produce 1024 shades but the panel can only orient the crystals to produce 256 shades. e.g. Shade 0, shade 4, shade 8, etc. If the pixel is supposed to display shade 401, but the panel can only produce 400 and 404, what you do is rapidly shift the pixel between 400 and 404.
You show 400 75% of the time, and 404 25% of the time (hence the F in FRC - frequency). This produces the illusion of the pixel showing shade 401. If it were showing shade 400 and 404 50% of the time, it'd produce the illusion of shade 402. If it were showing shade 400 25% of the time and 404 75% of the time, that would be shade 403.
Since the vast majority of images and movies available are encoded with 8-bit color, they would display the same on both monitors. Unless you're working with photos or video shot with 10-bit or higher color depth, there really isn't any reason to prefer true 10-bit over 8-bit + FRC. And even then most people would be hard-pressed to see the difference."

"The Xperia 1 II has a 10-bit equivalent display (8-bit with 2-bit smoothing) that can display a myriad of colors without banding."
so, technically, it's still an 8 bit.

Anonymous, 08 May 2020Not much difference between the two. Both Similar sizes sensors. Will give similar image quality. How is similar size and different name man?? The sensor used in Xperia 1 II is only available in mark two only. And it is so far largest physical sensor size used. No other smartphone without pixel binning achieve this size.

In reality, they were 8bit+frc. Xperia 1 did the same. GSMarena confirmed this in their review.
Go check in the display section.
GSMarena made no mistake in their spec sheet.

The phone itself shows that the people from sony are able to listen to their customers, it's a good step forward. Now they have to improve in the other parts like marketing, faster release after announcement, etc.

But if ... moreI dont think HTCs VR buissness is that much profitable to get em out of constant red due to mobile buissness. They dont RnD or innovate anymore, just release some generic smartphones today, to keep the brand presence afloat.
Sonys mobile on the other has joined the Electronics division, so RnD portfolio exchange and marketing budget is now greatly improved... thus the new and very interesting Xperia 1/1mkII line.
I believe that from now on, Sonys smartphone buissness can, and will gradually build up and return the fanbase back, resulting in more profit.

Sony is a large multunational compan... morewell as company if the sales are very low and pretty much losing money every year, at some point they'll close that division. do you remember VAIO? i hope the mobile division in sony is not like that
plenty of great japanese companies forced to sold/closed the division that made them famous in the first place in recent years. sony probably is the last bastion
I'm very much looking forward to this phone. Best looking phone of 2020. The ONLY phone with front facing stereo + dolby atmos + headphone jack. I will bet it has best camera of 2020, 1.8um pixels with Zeis T* lens, Bionz image processing and 70mm portrait lens!!

Sony is a large multunational company not based solely on smartphone portfolio like HtC, so they certainly wont stop making innovative new smartphones based on weaker sales and incomes.
And if it is of any insight, being the most popular flagship of 2020 atm on Arena, without even being released yet, Xperia 1 mk II will increase back Sonys mobile fanbase and sale numbers.
