I would rather give it to someone in family that has lower standards for a phone.
But the main question remains - what to buy instead and when?

The issues you and the other guy mentioned are not common problems which is why I can't generalize, so I speak for myself. So does many users on reddit.
If you have a problem, contact Sony and listen what they tell you instead of not writing them anything and complaining. I have raised an issue regarding picture preview poor quality compared to the image itself, they have responded within 24 hours. I live in Germany. So, don't generalize all customer supports. Probably your place had bad service.
Fearghast, 20 Aug 2020I love your theory, it does not work in real life.It does and I have done it. Had issue with Z1 rear camera noise level which I was unable to decide if it was even an issue or not through-out my first week before finally deciding that the noise level was bit high on rear camera of the phone in the second week of use. Visited the dealer who sold me. He requested me to visit SONY service center and the checked my phone I told them the clarity of the rear camera was bit off and they handed over the replacement documents. I took those documents to the dealer where I purchased my Z1 and he gave me a new sealed piece. No repair or no wait time for replacement to arrive.

I can see the the result already - denied, we... moreThat is rare case but the way SONY handles stuff is outstanding unlike SAMSUNG who take week to replace it even in first week or two. SONY certified seller or retailers will either replace it hand to hand on the spot. Or will ask you to return the phone to SONY service center and get the printed document sanctioned for replacement which they do no questions asked. Take that document to dealer you purchased from and they will hand you new piece.

Or if purchased online like from Amazon or similar sites there is return window. Return it and get it replaced.

Because 99% of users don't have these problems. May be do a software repair and then complain?? Sony should replace it if its part of hardware defect, because certainly I don't have these problems.
