RishiGuru, 11 Jun 2020The phone is growing on me every second. Alas Sony is not available in India. If you are really interested you can import from HK or Japan (Dual sim variants) using international shipping sites like Wandamobile or expansys.

Fearghast, 10 Jun 2020No it is not, it's black frame insertion it's 60Hz of picture and 60Hz of black screen ... it'... moreand by the way according to your logics, when one is watching a 24fps movie on a 144hz screen it's still a 24 fps movie, and they are wasting the other 120hz away, so what's the point of a 144hz screen then?

or youtube in 30fps, even 60fps, what's the point of 120, 144hz if most of the content is still 30 and 60fps?

or watching photos. They are stills! You don't need more than 1fps at all, but hey you got 144 times of 1 when you're watching a photo on a 144hz screen! Wow! So amazing!

Fearghast, 10 Jun 2020No it is not, it's black frame insertion it's 60Hz of picture and 60Hz of black screen ... it'... morethen be fair and call ALL things the way they should.
Sharp markets 240hz phone? It's a 120hz+BSI.

4k oled screen only has 2k IPS equivalent amount of dots? Then it's 2k.
No need to bother about marketing of 4k screen, guys it's a 2k screen.

4k60 video recording with dropped frames and low bitrate? Gimmick for noobs.
No video editor in their sane mind would ever use 4k even in 24fps with a bitrate lower than 100mbps, hence 60fps in 60mbps is completely useless for anyone more-or-less professionally engaged in videomaking.

Phone speakers? Don't have to be louder than a boombox, they just have to be loud enough to hear a call.

Hi-Res audio? Who cares, when one is on the subway they won't hear the difference between 128kbps MP3 and 1411kbps CD quality.

4000 mah mattery is just enough to get through a day

and so on.

Then tear down all other flagships too, be consecutive, don't just shove one Sony flagship. Come on go ahead.

Engadget Japan’s interview is quite insightful and there are a number of other things to note. We typically don’t get this much transparency when companies talk about their phones.

Display

1. The Sony Xperia 1 II has a 4K resolution OLED panel that runs at 60Hz refresh rate but has a “Motion Blur Reduction” feature that produces a “90Hz equivalent” refresh rate experience. What this feature does is “increase the voltage in time with the activation of the OLED pixels when displaying an image.” Sony says this has the advantage of avoiding the “pixel looking gray” which can happen when “[sending] the instruction to activate a pixel” as “it takes some time to switch from black to white.” XDA’s Dylan Raga posits that this might help reduce black smearing and motion blur when scrolling with black text on white backgrounds showing, which is a common problem on high refresh rate OLED panels. Motion Blur Reduction is active at all times when the feature is enabled, even when watching a movie.
2. 70-80% of users who purchased the Xperia 1 were satisfied with the display performance, which is what Sony used to justify keeping the 21:9 aspect ratio (a “CinemaWide display”). Sony says that over 50% of Netflix movie content is optimized for 21:9 and a few games like Call of Duty Mobile are also optimized.
3. The Xperia 1 II can be set to a white point of D55 or D65 so colors of a photo can be faithfully reproduced before printing them out. This is aimed at pro photographers.

Cameras

1. The T* after the “ZEISS” logo on the camera bump is “related to the special coating applied to the lenses.” This coating “minimizes flare and ghosting.”
2. The 16mm and 24mm sensors on the Xperia 1 II use a Dual Photo Diode (Dual PD) sensor which allows 100% of the pixels on the sensor to be used for phase-detect autofocus. This results in faster and more accurate autofocus, and is how the Xperia 1 II achieves its “world-first 20fps burst shooting with AF and AE.” Sony decided to keep the sensors at 12MP because choosing a higher resolution would affect the sensor’s readout speed, reducing the high-speed shooting and autofocus performance, and also “prevents the issue of the resolution changing when changing the magnification.”
3. Photography Pro is a separate camera app that is coming in a future software update. It will have more settings like manual shutter speed exposure settings, more white balance presets, and the aforementioned 20fps burst shooting mode.

Audio

1. Sony’s 360 Reality Audio feature was developed for surround-sound systems with 13+ channels but Sony created a virtual surround sound system using only 2 channels on the Xperia 1 II. Amazon Music HD, Tidal, and Deezer have 1000+ titles that are compatible with 360 Reality Audio.
2. The speakers have been improved from the Xperia 1 –> 1 II. The speakers are now on front, improving the L/R channel balance. Sony also increased the cabinet size, added more powerful amps, and collaborated with Sony Pictures and Sony Music to tune the audio.
3. Sony added a wind noise reduction feature when recording video.

Fearghast, 10 Jun 2020No it is not, it's black frame insertion it's 60Hz of picture and 60Hz of black screen ... it'... morePoint of motion "BLUR" reduction is to reduce the blurriness while scrolling. This gives you end effect that scrolling seems smooth (similar to 90Hz end effect). Here (while scrolling) one should not focus on how fast a thing refreshes. 90Hz allows user to see things (more clear??) while scrolling unlike 60Hz. MBR aims at reducing this bluriness effect at 60Hz while scrolling "SIMILAR" to 90Hz. Point here is, this is still better than typical 60Hz experience one experiences.

Frame rates is where actually 120Hz/144HZ/240Hz is useful (and makes sense) while gaming. I can't play (don't like to) on 60Hz monitor or TV obviously. But yeah I play rather on console and PC than smartphone and yeah Xperia 1 II is not a gaming smartphone (If I'm interested in HRR I would buy gaming phone with cooling systems). So.. There you go.. My opinion.

You are talking audio here - 99,99% of us... moreI highly doubt any flagship will go over 120Hz (Next are 144Hz or 240Hz) at least until 2035/2040. Given that no improvements in battery management. But I can see 4K is the next step Samsung will be taking in coming 2-3 years. Then all Chinese manufacturers will follow and so do people like you. What's unnecessary today will be necessary tomorrow. 4K on smartphone makes more sense than 16GB RAMs and 108MP. I'm just saying for rational persepctive.

We will meet and talk once again in 2025 about audio and display in flagship smartphones.

You are talking audio here - 99,99% of users do not even care for audio, audio quality, audio recording ... it's extremely sad and it's true.
Same goes for 6,5" 4K display that many find useless or do not care. Useless ... it certainly is.

60+Hz will make a much bigger impact than Sony can ever dream of with their 360 or dsee.

You might spam as hard as you can, praise the Sony as some deity, but we will see soon enough, how anything Xperia 1 II introduced and was even usefull (unlike 360 or dsee) will fail to create even the tiniest ripple on the mobile market.

See I don't guess XPERIA 1 II will have worse DAC than XPERIA XZ Premium. The DAC on XZ Premium is the only DAC on smartphones which can be called audiophile level. See Audiophile level doesn't mean putting out crazy power what it means is to bring out details in the music keeping it neutral and clear without adding any color through out the frequency range and not miss any detail. XPERIA XZ Premium is the only smartphone which comes close enough to my Mayflower O2 in neutrality and detail, neutrality and clear out-put and also gets out 60% volume with my HD660S which is not bad at all. No smartphone from SAMSUNG, LG, Google or One-Plus can even come close to it in clarity and detail. If XPERIA 1 II is same as XZ Premium or even better then I don't get the point of not calling it Audiophile level DAC.

Smithravi, 10 Jun 2020Mark my words, soon 21:9, 4K, HS power control and 360 Reality audio gonna be must features in... moreMy four cents:

1) HS power control is a great new idea put forth by Sony. I really like this new approach and it for sure will be copied by other manufacturers.

2) With 21:9 display ratios, well phones are getting taller day by day and yes there will be a day when all phone will reach 21:9. Hopefully this is where the madness ends. Sony this time had the courage to jump straight to 21:9, but there were days in the past when other manufactures jumped to 18:9 and Sony lagged behind with 16:9. So no credit goes here to Sony.

3) 4K display. Well higher resolution, higher touch sampling rate & higher refresh rate are all welcome for displays. Sony did not make any breakthrough by providing high resolution display. They just wanted to differentiate their product just like some other phones may have audiophile grade audio DACs which Sony Xperia 1 II lacks.

4) 360 Reality is great for fun listening. More or less all manufactures now-a-days provide some kind of audio effects which tech nerds rave about but doesn't understand a bit. For any kind of critical music listening, this type of digital signal processing always deteriorates audio quality. In other words people who doesn't understand audio quality will like 360 Reality.

All manufacturers big or small innovate and others learn and copy from each other. This is good and benefits the end customer.

Mark my words, soon 21:9, 4K, HS power control and 360 Reality audio gonna be must features in their separate segment from every manufacturer. Just like how 3.5mm, waterproof are made popular by Sony.
