what's more, I can prove that you are wrong and you are repeating false opinions of fake testers. With my Xperia 1V (1VI), I have all the photos I took on a given day (session) and the times they were taken, and believe me (when I went to Wawel Castle) I have photos on my disk from the whole day and there are the hours of taking the photos and the photos data. I wouldn't even have time to take many shots and set up the camera specifically.
I even checked it now, I usually took 3 photos in a given place and all of them are OK. Time? All taken within a same time. Look, screen from my PC with time of "shot"
https://ibb.co/GsKmGm1 (samples from video "Xperia 1V Exmor T daytime photos (auto mode)")
Is that point and shoot?
Below my two videos there is a link to a disk with some samples.
There are many corrupt testers on YT and I won't even mention them
SOO i can even proof that Xperia 1V is superb point-and-shoot camera (I have many photos on disk, much more that I uploaded to film and there is time when all photos was taken).
Anonymous, 15 Nov 2024The video you posted looks fine, but theres no camera movement, so its not really a good test ... moreI post videos with photos that I make in Auto mode (night and day) and for 10 photos maybe 1-2 was not good as I want. If lens is clean on Xperia it is ultra hard to make wrong photo. "Testers" knows that. Always wipe lenses and you always will took nice photos.
PS Additionally, focusing by touching the screen in a given place also sets the exposure measurement location, so in Auto mode you can still influence what the photo will look like. Do you want a photo taken through bushes to have more bright bushes than sunsets? Click on the bushes..
"The video you posted looks fine"... no it is not fine. In "raw" non compressed version on good OLED it looks staggering (look on details on roof and check every frame).
maybe soon i will post non compress ver.
Anonymous, 15 Nov 2024The video you posted looks fine, but theres no camera movement, so its not really a good test ... moreYou seem to be used to Auto mode. Sadly, taking pictures has become such a common activity that it leaves little to no room for the so-called photographer.
I'm strongly considering purchasing a Polaroid for my 14-year old this Christmas. I feel I must teach him or help him understand the value of that second when you take a photo and can't go back or forward for pre- or post-processing. You choose your moment and your frame, and... ta-daaa, the moment has passed and the that photo is real.

From what I saw though, photos/videos from xperias just aren't as good as google pixels/iphones. Especially in the telephoto. You get one excellent photo from an xperia and then get 9 mediocre ones, meanwhile a pixel/iphone will give 10 good photos. Composition/skill doesn't explain overexposed photos, shaky low light video, and muddled telephoto pictures. Phone cameras are meant to be an easy 'point and shoot' experience, and xperias just haven't caught up to other manufacturers in that regard. The exception is samsung. I tried an s24 and the camera is absolute dogsh*t the autofocus doesn't work, terrible sharpness/chromatic aberration around edge of photo, and either grey and grainy or horribly overexposed photos, not to mention downgraded cameras on s24 ultra compared to s23 ultra.

And the video recording mode in Xperia 1V is out of the league. I posted some video samples on YT and most people don't believe they are phone recordings. And I didn't even post all the samples and the ones on YT have 1:6 compression
I still can't believe it when I play these samples in the "RAW" version on OLED with 100% DCIP3. One of examples (but with 1:6 cmpression). Take my word for it, the uncompressed version is downright unreal (like for phone)... you just have to look closely

Xperia records video (if you set that feature) in BT2020 (HLG). It is most wide color space that display can achive. There is no display on the market right now that can achive even 90% of BT2020.
I was considering buying this phone, but decided against it, primarily due to the large size and lackluster camera performance. Here is a detailed guide on how to improve the Xperia lineup. (Listen up Sony, this is free advice/market feedback from an actual consumer).
1. The size
The Xperia 1 vi is too damn big, and Sony didn't even release the 5 vi as a smaller option. And even when Sony did release the 5, it was missing a telephoto lens. Not everyone wants a big phone, and other manufacturers are starting to understand this. Both Apple and Google released pro models with the highest end specs in both a bigger and smaller size.
So, make the Xperia 1 have a width of ~75-76mm for those who want big phones, and the xperia 5 have a width of ~70-71mm for those who want a normal sized phone. And make them both have the same high-end specs, including a telephoto lens.
2. The cameras
Get rid of the variable telephoto lens. While it may be cool, ultimately it's a gimmick and doesn't perform nearly as well as fixed lenses, as well as being more expensive to produce and harder to ensure quality. Instead, put in fixed focal length telephoto camera. Something like the pixel 9 pro's 48 MP, 1/2.55", 113mm should work, but what would be even better and realistic would be something like a 48/50MP, 1/2" or bigger, 125mm lens. An upgrade to the main and ultrawide cameras would also be welcome. Something like this would be excellent:
48 MP 25mm 1/1.2" or even 1" sensor main camera (Sony has put 1"-type sensors in their smartphones before). They can also put in a variable aperture for better DOF/exposure control
48 MP 125mm 1/2" or larger sensor telephoto
24 MP 12.5mm 1/2" or larger sensor ultrawide
-(large sensor marketing opportunity)
8k video @ up to 30fps
4k video @ up to 120fps
1080p video @ up to 480 fps
720p video @ up to 1080 fps
-(Slow motion capability marketing opportunity)
All of these video resolutions/fps have the same data rate, and the Xperia 1 vi can do 4k@120fps, so all of these can be achieved with current gen hardware, not to mention even more powerful processors that are going to be coming out in the future. No BS frame interpolation slow-motion needed.
Better 'point and shoot/automatic experience'
All of these camera specs are achievable, and together with software improvements, would make Sony Xperia smartphones have the best cameras in the world. Sony supplies all the other phones companies with cameras, so Sony's own smartphones deserve amazing cameras.
3. The design
First of all, move the volume buttons to the left side. The volume buttons on the right side is such a stupid design since you can't reach the buttons comfortably, and it's really hard to take a screenshot with one hand without switching to the left hand (90% of people are right-handed and left handed people can use phones with the volume buttons on the left just as easily as right handed people). Power button on the right, volume on the left is just a better ergonomic design.
Move the camera button lower down near the bottom corner. It would be easier to use.
Make the phone slightly thicker so that the back is flush with the camera, so that phone doesn't
wobble when on a flat surface. The extra thickness can be used to better components/bigger battery. Alternatively, make the camera bump horizontal like on the Google Pixel smartphones so that the phone doesn't wobble.
Make the phone have flat, polished sides for a more modern look, or preferably make the phone edges rounded and give the phone a curved screen for a more futuristic look and better ergonomics. Currently, the ribbed metal sides and shape of the frame makes the phone kind of look like an unfinished prototype and the very slightly curved corners don't look that good. Either give the phone screen proper rounded corners or square corners.
Bring the notification LED back. I have no clue why they removed it in the first place.
Put the headphone jack on the bottom of the phone.
Put in a dedicated SD card with 2 separate Sim slots.
Give the phone a 18:9-19:9 screen. Moving from 21:9 to 19.5:9 was a step in the right direction, but a 19.5:9 screen is still a bit too tall to comfortably fit in pockets. The vast majority of content is 16:9 and almost no content is taller/wider than 18:9. Most people don't watch movies on their phones that often, and even movies are moving away from the 21:9 aspect ratio.
Keep the headphone jack, microsd slot, stereo front-firing speakers, and unblemished display with no notches/cutouts. These are major selling points since the Sony Xperia is literally the only smartphone in the world to offer these features.
Bump up the charging speed to 2c. At 3.7v / 5000 mAh (18.5 Wh) this would be 37w charging. 3.7v / 5500 mAh (20.35 Wh) would be around 41w charging. This would be a nice bump in charge speed without increasing battery degradation due to excessive heat.
Add Qi2 magnetic wireless charging. This will make the Xperia stand out even more from the competition since for some unknown reason other Android smartphone makers don't want to add such a useful feature. They copy Apple in removing useful features and adding bad features, but when Apple comes up with something great (magsafe) and makes it open source for everyone to use (Qi2 magnetic wireless charging standard), the android phone makers don't want to use it.
4. Software
Sony phones NEED to have longer software support. 3 years of software updates and 4 years of security updates is simply unacceptable when all of the competition is offering 7+ years of software and security updates. Give your phones at least 6 years of software and 7 years of security updates.
5. Marketing.
This one is simple. Advertise your phones. Many people have no clue that Sony Xperia smartphones even exist. Actually make them available to buy and put your phones in physical retail stores so that people can see and try them out.
This is a bit of a long read, but implementing these changes will make Sony Xperias the best smartphones in the world.

Or do you simply like screen cutouts?
Learn from Sony. They remind us we should stick to simplicity even when the technology behind the screen is more advanced than everything else the competition has to offer.
I, personally, like no screen cutouts.
