not a good phone
there is no manual focus and the autofocus is just unusable
the waterproofing is a joke and the screen shatterd with an screen protector on it. the repair cost is 160 eur where I live.
if you use youre phone more than 2.5 hours a day you won't have enough batery.
conclusion: with third party camera apps the 21MP camera is nice, but the rest of the phone is bad though

I have had this phone for two years and have not experienced any problems with it.
It has a great camera and I am perfectly happy with the phone.
This phones sucks. The Camera and the battery are useless. In addition there is this shut downs that you cant help. Service of Sony service centers sucks even more, they take forever in name of fixing the problem, but dont fix shit. I wad a big Sony fan from the time of walkman series, However; after getting this phone i cant trust sony with any of its products any more... I know its too late for a review, but nevertheless i wanted this to be out there....
DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE! Seriously. Do not buy this phone. You may be thinking that you are buying a quality product because it is SONY, but the sad truth is - this phone is the biggest fraud done by SONY. Namely, this phone has one serious problem - camera focus. If you have doubts regards this, please browse internet for "xperia m5 camera problems" (or similar) and see what you can find. Almost ALL of the users complain about this and SONY did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about this.
In my personal experience, this focusing problem is such that I do not even bother to use the camera on the phone anymore. I purchased this phone (for 300+ EUR) because of good camera quality and to upgrade from my SONY Xperia Z3 Compact (which was fantastic, BTW). After the purchase, I had to go away for a while and could not afford to replace the phone for a few months. During this period, I did my homework on this problem and came to a surprising conclusion that SONY simply rushed to put some cheap phone on the market that they did not even bother to make it working. The serial problem on this phone (among many) is - camera focus. It uses some new hybrid focus technology which simply - does not work. And then SONY just decided to trick their customers and kicked out this piece of garbage.
After I took it to their represented service repair shop, they charged me for diagnostics and said that it is a "common software problem on M5" and that I should "play with the settings". Then, after some time, when this "playing with the settings" thing turned out to be bogus advice, I took it to the service repair shop again and this time they "repaired" it (and charged me a good sum of money. However, they - simply did not repaired it. It still has the same problem.
Now, I do not expect some fabulous photos to turn out, but I just want the phone to do what it's counterparts do - work as it is prescripted. And after having my Xperia Z3 Compact working fantastic - this phone turned out to be the biggest disappointment and a fraud from SONY. So right now, I am back to my Xperia Z3 Compact, but if I ever consider a new phone, I will make sure that it has nothing to do with SONY.
And my advice from the first hand experience is; after seeing that SONY is capable of deceiving it's own customers like this and making such a fraud just to get some money, if you have any common sense - please stay away from SONY. Yes, there are many SONY products that work just fine and I do not doubt for one second that there are many satisfied customers. However, I will not, EVER, place my confidence with the company that is capable of tricking it's own customers into such a cheap fraud.
Federico , 03 Oct 2017Same problem. Shut down and not start unless in plug in. Hi i have this phone for 2 years. Been great. I had the shutdown issue but its to do with low bandwidths, sometimes when the reception is bad it picks it up as a fault n shuts down to protect itself (wierd, i know).
I fixed it by going into engineering mode through the phone dialing app and you turn off the 3 lowest bandwidths. You dont notice the difference and it never shutdowns again after that.
I saw there is a video on youtube on how to do it.
why sony created this phone? All sony's product its awesome, but this phone... very disappoint me

Not all positive reviews are fake, I've had none of the reported problems with my device and I am a heavy user. Have had the device for over a year and I am love it.
Had bought 2 of these model after observing some "great reviews". that was like 2 yrs ago, both phones have the same problems, shut down multiple times per day and will not restart unless you plug on to a power supply.
All the FAKE reviews out there about how "great" is. It's definite the worst phone I have ever used. You,ve been warned.................
