I have send my phone to service center again for the second time and have a small argument with the counter. Waiting for them to call me. I do not think Sony know what the issue as the first repair I send I listed as hardware problem but all they did is reload software. They do not have a policy for refund or change to a phone thus need a bit of arguing if you guys want to return the phone.
I recently got my M5 from my network provider. And I'm plagued with shutdown woes as well. I am a Sony Fan. I've had many Sony Phones in the past, but my first Xperia was a Z1, which drowned after 2 years even though it was waterproof. I survived with my old HTC Desire so I could wait for the Z5. Unfortunately, the Z5 did not seem very much better than the M5 (I did not believe the shutdown problems I read here). The day I went to re-contract my subscription, the provider was offering it at $0, instead of the $199 a week earlier. In addition, I had already spent my Phone budget on data retrieval, off the dead Z1. Yet, I got another Xperia, M5, despite my wife's Z3 rear-glass craking from a drop from my Sofa and a friends Z3 Compact dying for no reason. All because I'm a Sony Fan.
The M5 shutdown problems started less than a week after I acquired it. I called my Provider, they told me that this is a device problem and I had to call Sony. Xperia care was not much help, they told me to switch the phone into Safe Mode to troubleshoot the problem.
Safe mode removes all the apps I installed. The phone came with a number of apps from the provider and Sony. I had only installed Whatsapp, Dolphin browser and Super Backup to begin with. I uninstalled Dolphin Browser and Super Backup but Whatsapp is a little difficult because I rely on it more than SMS these days. So living in Safe Mode is not really an option. The other option is to perform a Factory Reset.
What is really unacceptable is that the phone "dies" on you. It doesn't reboot, It DIES!!! Even a reboot I can live with as the phone will be in a usable state after the reboot. And if it does shutdown and I could switch it back on by pressing the power button, that would also be acceptable. Nothing I do will wake the phone up. I need to defibrillate it by plugging my charger in, even though it shows there's still juice on the battery when I do that. This is clearly not acceptable. What if I do not have a charger with me!
I've done a Factory reset now. Lets see if it holds up. Reading all the comments here does not give me much hope. It does appear like it may be a Network switching problem (WCDMA/LTE etc). The last shutdown happened while I was using it and I notice the Network Status icon switch from LTE to H and then died.
I hope Sony fixes this issue. In the mean time, I'll post any new findings here.
My dad bought m5 about a month ago and it started to randomly shut down after 2 weeks.i reset it into factory setting and it is useable until 3 weeks later, which is today.it shut down 4 times since i left home.at home,i usually online using wifi, but today im using the mobile network.the shutdown issue probably due to the network preference.as the network changes since im travelling from 10place to another, the power used from the battery also change.that is probably why the m5 heat increase from time to time.ips screen also seems to feast on the battery life as it is bright and more ppi.thats why the battery drains quickly.from the heat generated by the network, ips screen and the cpu itself, the phone might shut off as a fail safe mechanism .the power output from the battery sometimes might be lower than the load cause by the high clock speed of the cpu and ram.that is why it only can be turned on using charger.this is my opinion only.m5 is a good phone with great specs, but for me it is still unstable.

Sounds logical. Replacing the device is probably a cheaper and much less time consuming process. It seems Xperia M5 is a stillborn device but i wonder why this issue didn't go worldwide and why Sony didn't declare anything about this? Perhaps because it's not a flagship?
I myself use Xperia C5 Ultra with no issue at all and both devices had been announced around same time, so it's interesting.
