to solve the shutting down issue try the below steps.
change the network from automatic ( GSM/ WCDMA) to be manual GSM if u aren't using internet data ( 2G) . or choose WCDMA if u r using 3G.
till now it works good with me hope it doesn't shutdown cuz i love this phone.

I already bought sony m5 last day. I never experience any shotdown or any problem using m5. Although it gets hot when im playing games and browsing. Aside from that there's no oyher problem. I'm from Philippines.
I m using this fone for 1 nd a hlf mnth nd its so far so gud...i have nvr faced the prblms mntiond in othr cmnts lyk autoshutdown nd chargng issues. Fone is wrking prfctly nd btry backup is also gud (atlst a day). So far i m totaly satisfied bt this prdct the camera also wrking superbly.......:)

[deleted post]Probably handsets originally manufactured from certain locations. It seems that the ones we bought in Malaysia are the ones facing this problem.
I bought C4 two months ago, a good phone. And I found that M5 is having a better camera and unique casing, so now I have 2 Sony phones. C4 keep as spare, using M5 all the time. The only problem is the body become quite warm after continuous browsing and gaming at the same time, but no worry, I just dip it into a glass of cold water and it cool down immediately.

Bought it on 22nd September and over the holidays it rebooted by itself at least 20 times a day. The store suggested me to send to service center and did so 3 DAYS AFTER BUYING it. It has been there since and now for over 1 month, service center says "still waiting for parts from Germany". Sony messed up not only for the Z series it seems they've did the same on this one as well with all the comments I've read here. It's a shame... I've always been a Sony supporter since Sony Ericsson days and this kind of experience really destroys the brand. They should've recalled the M5, or replace off to replace with different model at least because IT RUINS MY EXPERIENCE OF OWNING A SONY which normally in the past was awesome.

I bought this phone about three weeks ago, and so far had not experience any of the issues mentioned by many here. it's fast and i can use it the way i want without any hiccups in performance. connections worked fine, but i haven't tried lte yet. i do agree with some comments that the shutdown issue is caused by network because i saw the same issue with xperia sola. i think, android is programmed to shut the phone down if it fails to find any network. this is also why when you start the phone without a sim card, the phone nags you to insert a sim. if not, it will automatically shut down. as in the case with m5 shutdowns, i think it happens because lte signals is not yet available everywhere. my M5 is set to wcdma/gsm. i have yet to try lte, thus why i never had any shutdowns. So if this is the case, who should we blame? Sony or Google?
