xXENDER FREAKXx, 22 Dec 2017Precisely, unfair for the single camera high-end flagshipsActually the Sony already has the background defocus 3 years ago but the Dxomark don't take into the protocol. Dxomark until this year start the new protocol is too late and it is unfair to the Sony, because Sony start the invention and the follower all behind Sony. Even the AR Sony already have it for early 3 years ago. Even the best place side frame fingerprint on smartphone is first done by Sony and the follower is late to show off! Even the first 4K HDR and 4K video recording is released by Sony. Even the stacked Dram camera sensor is created by Sony..... Where are all the followers and copy cat? Sony start the trends too early and show the copy cat too late to follow Sony steps!
Lex79, 22 Dec 2017Why everyone is getting so het up on DXOmark I'll never know. Will say this though, yes the... moreiphone maybe can do 3D scanning 5 year later and the 3D scanning trends will be waiting a 5 years to start.
Why everyone is getting so het up on DXOmark I'll never know.
Will say this though, yes they do appear to be altering their criteria based on the market leaders requirements. Why? Because their are the market leaders, where they go, others tend to follow.
For example, Apple didn't introduce biometric security, but it wasn't taken seriously until they brought out Touch ID. Sony were doing waterproof handset way before anyone else, but only when Samsung and Apple implemented it did everyone else start to follow suit.
That's just how the market works, were Sony number 1, then they would set the pace.
Now as for DXOmark now scoring such things like bokeh, zoom and other duel lens features, well of course they were going to now that Apple and Samsung have adopted such tech, from Dxo's point of view it's only a matter of time before the rest follow suit.
Is this fair....no, it is business though. Why would they start scoring 3d scanning? what, your expecting all other OEMs to jump on that bandwagon just because Sony have done it?
Probably not till Apple have their own alternative will everyone else start copying.
As for scoring slo-mo (as I have seen mentioned), well don't be so quick to wish for that unless your of the belief that number of FPS is the only criteria against which it will be scored? Not resolution, dynamic range, sound quality etc.
Might just be Sony don't come out on top in that category anyway.....just maybe....
Tann Hauser, 22 Dec 2017Adding zoom and bokeh scores just in time for iph8 dual camera phone release.... They didnt... morePeople would think that they are professional smartphone camera reviewers, but for me I don't think so. I rather look at GSMARENA's one, why? It did not mention the other parts of the camera, and it is strange that they focus on zoom and bokeh effect a lot, this is where the bias part comes in, those single camera smartphones cannot do well in these 2 aspects, well maybe they can, if they had Google's machine learning method to train the smartphone's camera. And DxOMark definitely is a Pay-To-Win kind of thing, so how do we trust them? I had never trusted their review since the use of their new protocol, I always trust GSMARENA, they got no hate on any brand, and no one payed them to say good things about a smartphone, they review smartphones honestly, unlike DxOMark...

They didnt care too much about scoring Losless Zoom and Background defocus (aka portrait/bokeh mode) features in Xperias since 2 years ago...
But, dual camera sets on iphones, sammys, etc...
And those are extra features, not automode out of the box...
"Heck, guys, we should now include scoring this extra features, Apple and Samsung now have it, so score them..."
Yeah, wheres the scores for slo mo feature, or 3d scan feature Dxo?
"We will include em once apple or samsung get them, no biggie..."
So in the end yeah, new protocol is just some circumstantial based protocol, not trusting that....
Seems Sony ditched them too for that kind of behaviour, no more Sony phone rews, just numerous midrange chinese phone rews there now
And the “scoring"...
subscores: 79,84,92,78,88.
overall score: 98
?!!

Why they change the protocol? To makes new phones get higher score more and more without a limit but just adding the zoom and bokeh for partiality unfair comparison.
xXENDER FREAKXx, 21 Dec 2017Yes, definitely, something changed with DxOMark. I once trusted them for bringing good reviews... moreI just never really took stock in what they had to say. There is some limited relevance to their conclusions perhaps, but I always said to take those conclusions in context and contrast them with other testing site results.
Whilst I agree that their is likely an element of 'Pay-to-win' at play, I would simply suggest that this was also possibly (at least potentially) true when Sony ruled the DXO roost.
Anonymous, 21 Dec 2017the reason i asked about dxo is because long time ago he (someone i replied in my previous pos... moreWeren't you the same guy who used to refer to DxOMark as rubbish and now you are relying on it, instead of being surprised of that guy mind changing why you aren't surprised of DxOMark protocol sudden massive change?? IPhones from the dust to the top, Sony from the top to the dust because it suits now.
DxOMark scores been rubbish since last year, and before the xz premium, Galaxy s8 scored lower than the s7 while the s8 is way step ahead from the rubbish camera of the s7.
The only smartphones which had fair scores are only Google pixel's no other smartphones.

Lex79, 21 Dec 2017I've never actually rated DXOmark as reliable. The Sony fans once swore by them, then somethin... moreYes, definitely, something changed with DxOMark. I once trusted them for bringing good reviews of smartphones, but not anymore, because they had a new protocol which is kind of bias for single camera smartphones which is bokeh, and they make it affect the overall points so much that now the older smartphone points are really just screwed up (Example: XPERIA XZ got 87, and now the new protocol made the XPERIA XZ PREMIUM have 83 points). They should have made some consideration to the older smartphones before having a new protocol. But this isn't the real reason why people don't trust DxOMark anymore, the real reason is because some brands "Pay-To-Win". U may see some smartphones on top of the list which others review about it and have bad impressions of the camera of the smartphone, because they bribe them to give the smartphone a good score. I know most brands wouldn't do that but, there are just some cheating their way up to the top
Anonymous, 21 Dec 2017no one believe to non reputable source like yours. What about gsma and dxo? do you believe them?I've never actually rated DXOmark as reliable. The Sony fans once swore by them, then something changed though....can't quite put my finger on what that might have been :)
Marks my words though, reworked test criteria or no, should DXOmark again choose to put an Xperia in the Number 1 position, then the Sony crowd will go flocking back to them with enthusiasm.
I can't blame the Fanboys really though, they are easily lead by company rhetoric, and these companies are all to quick to boast about DXO scores like they matter....they don't.
Trying to claim those so called Youtube comparison videos as useful in any way though just shows how desperate some people are to make point.
They are clickbait, nothing more and should be treated only as such.
Put it this way, I currently own a Pixel 2 and a Moto E4 Plus and could quite easily (given the time) produce side by side shots taken by each, then present them on a YouTube video and make you believe the E4 had the more capable camera. I could even find some awful music to go with it.
Anonymous, 21 Dec 2017no one believe to non reputable source like yours. What about gsma and dxo? do you believe them?Actually most of us here believe to sites like these....
Why wouldnt we?
Bashers probably dont, yes...as them videos mostly say quite a different story from their lame "Sonys camera is crap" troll comments.
That site only collects camera compare samples from other tech sites, including arena, and presents them in hq video for people to see...
And they are not always in Sonys favor, but mostly are...
Its not quite polite of them yes, but, its quite a comprehensive overlook of flagship camera performance compares of numerous tech site tests all over the web...
Its much more conclusive for the viewers eyes than for ex, that lously done inconclusive XZ Prem review from "new protocol" dxo mark, with test numbers that dont even mathematically add up to final scores...
I just watched Bashir video in comparison with iPhone X LG V30 and Sony XZ1 for me the two both LG and XZ1 took good pictures even the dynamic range of the LG works excellent pro the post processed Sony makes the images look more reality and do not over expose what in the end leaves us with a good sharp picture pro it is necessary for Sony to specify more the HDR if Sony focuses on that there will be no margin of error in dynamic ranges solutions: implement a more intuitive software interface place a flash of dual or three tones and enable the shutter control or q can be adjusted better according to the scene with the laser and would be a touch more of the top car with that Sony is and will be the best pro camera with those technical lax who do not propose alternatives a f / 1.8 of serious luxury with a double tone flash and the controlled predictive sensor will efficiently surpass this camera I hope that my opinion will be heard by the technicians and Sony ceo graci ace
