red, 15 Sep 2013how's the battery life? The battery lasts the entire day on moderate usage. I had been using note II since the last one year and I found the battery life to be comparable...
Bomj, 14 Sep 2013I couldn't find anywhere that Xperia Z Ultra uses the Gorilla or Dragontrail glass. Could you ... moreSony doesn't explain who manufactures the glass. I'v been looking as I have the xperia z and live it!
I had been using the Samsung galaxy series since the last 3 years (Galaxy S, Note1 and Note II), and the user experience had been quite good, so was quite apprehensive of shifting to a different brand. However, I guess that I had got bored with the same Samsung design and so I decided to take the plunge. The shopkeeper discouraged me from buying the phone saying that he had used it and had found it to be unwieldy and that he stopped using it within 3 days and shifted back to his iphone 5 (but then his usage needs are very different, he could not stick with the note 2 either which I found to be a wonderful phone). I bought the phone and my first impression was that it is much better looking (at least I thought so) than the Samsung design (or maybe because I was bored by the same design it was the different design that got me excited. On starting the screen (which is the supposed to be the biggest plus point of the phone), I was certainly not overhelmed. I guess that the I had got used to the Amoled/Super Amoled units of Samsung and found the details lacking (maybe I am unable to express myself but I would definitely say that the screen of Note II was much better than the xperia). Xperia has a yellow tinge to it and the colours are not so vivid. On increasing the brightness, it hurts the eyes, but does not increase the vividness. On screen quality I would once again gives a big thumbs up to the amoled screens (Update: on using the phone since the last one week, I am beginning to like my xperia screen as well but the quality difference is there (I feel))
The next thing that I miss is the stylus based functions of the note. You can use a pencil on the zu. I tried. It works (wonderfully in fact), but I did not have the courage to use the pencil/pen on my screen lest it may scratch the screen. I am still trying to find out whether a pencil/pen will damage my screen (my Nintendo ds stylus did not work on it). The two window feature that the Samsung note offered is also being missed.
The worst experience came when on the 2nd day of purchase itself I experienced software issues that I had read about but thought would not effect me. The screen would not wake up. It did wake up after I don't know after how many presses of the power button on removal of the sim card, but on inserting the sim again the phone restarted and then did not beyond the sony logo and then a blank screen. After a little research simultaneous press of the power button and the up Volume button for about 3-5 seconds switched off the phone but on restart the same problem occurred. No amount of trying would get it to start. On taking the phone to the SOny software centre, I was told that it is a software problem and that it would be repaired (I was told that the problem might have occurred as I had done a OTA update of a new built that had flashed on my phone). Anyways the phone was returned the next day fully functioning and in the last 5-6 days there have been no further problems (of phone not waking up from sleep or in restarting (it took a lot of courage to shut down and restart the phone). I think it should function fine but I am keeping my fingers crossed.
Camera: I have not seen a worse camera in my life. It is a 8 megapixel camera but the noise in the pictures is unbelievable. I hardly used the flash on my note, so it is definitely not a flash problem. I do not use my phone for taking pictures extensively so I am not too bothered by the camera quality, but those who do, pls watch out.
Speaker: The speaker sound is quite feeble and it is only in a quite room that you will be able to hear your your tube videos. My younger (4yr old kid) listens to his nursery rhymes and he seemed disappointed on the sound as he turned to his mummy's phone.
The phone is quite snappy and I never felt any lag. The sound quality on calls were decent though, since I wear glasses, it is a little difficult to hold the phone to the ear without dislodging the glasses or sometimes when you adjust it the proximity sensor goes off contact and the screen comes on with some presses being recorded on the live screen.
The web browsing experience was wonderful. All pages render wonderfully well on the big screen (Both landscape as well as portrait). The hd resolution, I guess enables even portrait view rendering very well and the entire page is well readable.
I intend to buy the sbh52 when it releases. I think that the problem of calls will be solved with this accessory.
I am loving my phone and do not regret shifting from note 2 (unless the restart problem starts coming up again). It is definitely a eye-catcher phone and will the object of discussion among friends (Samsung phones have ceased to be attractive as each family has at least one).
Bottom-line: If camera and sound quality are not the prime requirements, I would definitely recommend the phone....
screen this big with battery 3050mah only???? with only 8 mega pixel cam ang has no flash... very poor from the market leader.... I feel sorry for this xperia
jinky, 13 Sep 2013i had a problem with the sd... 32g... after a week i thought the problem was the z ultra ... b... moreI not sure if sd can coz a battery drained
Maybe you bought an old sd card which is slower
Or maybe you dont optimized your battery with stamina mode. Or you dont update your phone.
I had a old 16gb microsd card, it really slow in transfer files but never drained my battery fast.
I am interested with the phone. However the drawback is the one sell in Malaysia is without LTE
Anonymous, 12 Sep 2013really? the design is 8.5 you must be kidding it looks like a brick hahahaBut it FEELS so sexy! :D
joejoe, 13 Sep 2013It use dragontrail glass on the front and gorilla at the back. Dragontrail is the same quality... moreI couldn't find anywhere that Xperia Z Ultra uses the Gorilla or Dragontrail glass. Could you point where did you find it?
AnonD-183232, 13 Sep 2013KKK what about cam the lack of pixels after capturing the image is true or not and in nyt tyms... moreCamera is about average. If photo quality is important to you, the Z1 is probably the one you should check out. It would have been nice if Sony could have just combined these two into one device: A phablet with the Z1's camera and made our choice easier. As it is, you basically have to decide what's your priority, A big screen or a better camera.
I had one, honestly it goes down to what you prefer. I you want a camera phone, but a z1. I have the z ultra it's actually a so so camera. Night photos was fantastic thanks to the exmor rs it looks pixelated at first but when you try to take a shot it enhances the image automatically. I must say it really give the image a good lighting effect. Yeah it's not the best camera, it's somewhat pixelated but decent. Movie was a 10/10 it improves the video quality you can actually see that the color improves. Even just looking at the images in teh screen it's like amoled but not hurting to the eys. and IT'S NOT THAT BIG, I can still put it in my pocket.
KIKO, 13 Sep 2013Can this divice be used as an remote control like the tablet S ?The xperia z ultra can't be used as a remote control, because it doesn't have an infrared port.
AnonD-151706, 04 Sep 2013is no have gorila glass.. , ,, , , ?!!! did we always must use screenguard is very waste money It use dragontrail glass on the front and gorilla at the back. Dragontrail is the same quality and durable like the gorilla glass.. Made by Asahi
KKK what about cam the lack of pixels after capturing the image is true or not and in nyt tyms hw it works????????????????????
AnonD-183232, 12 Sep 2013While playing the games how the device behaves(i.e., is that the device getting hot)............. moreOh, I forgot to mention that the speaker itself is rather weak in terms of volume level. Its positioning also makes it easy for the user to accidentally cover it with their fingers in landscape mode when you play games. I wish sony could have found room for another speaker.
Mms, 12 Sep 2013For me, the lack of led flash was almost a deal breaker, but in the end, I chose the Z Ultra o... moreYa...i agree with u...Ultra Is big Screen and have a better camera...Z1 is good to but the screen is small...so i take Z ultra too >.
AnonD-183232, 12 Sep 2013While playing the games how the device behaves(i.e., is that the device getting hot)............. moreIt generates a reasonable amount of heat, especially when playing 3d intensive games, but its nothing excessive. Playing games for an hour straight, my battery drop was about 10%. Its a combination of triluminos and bravia 2. Just updated my unit, so its now x-reality instead of bravia 2.
i had a problem with the sd... 32g... after a week i thought the problem was the z ultra ... but it was the sd draining all the battery life ...
