Anonymous, 26 Jun 2012i do have also htc G1. it worked well for 2 years but now it doesn't show any network coverage... moremy g1 also have this problem
(You may scoff)
my solution : wipe your sim card with Kleenex or napkin smeared with a little alcohol or water
then put it in your g1 and it may work.(50%)

How to check your phone is rooted or not ?
install a Superuser app from the market , then install a Terminal Emulator from the market. open the Terminal , type su , then press enter. if the Superuser app pops up , press allow. if you have root , a # sign will appear in the terminal on the next line. if not rooted , it will say that you don’t have permission.

if your phone is not Rooted, do the following to Root it :
1.Downgrading the Firmware
How to check your phone is downgraded or not ?
Press menu key, go to Settings » about phone. Now check your Build Number, if it’s (RC29 or RC7) then your phone is downgraded and skip down to step 2.
If not,
Download the RC29 or RC7, DREAIMG.nbh file (Make sure it is named exactly DREAIMG.nbh)
RC29 (US): http://cmw.22aaf3.com/dream_magic/dream/stock/rc29/DREAIMG.nbh
RC7 (Europe): http://cmw.22aaf3.com/dream_magic/dream/stock/rc7/DREAIMG.nbh
Format the SD card to FAT32.
Copy the DREAIMG.nbh to the root of the SD card (NOT in any folders). Make sure the filename is DREAIMG.nbh exactly or it will not work.
Turn the device off and reboot holding the Camera button and the Power button until the device is in bootloader mode.
Then press the Power button to start the update.
When the installation completes, press the Action key which is the Trackball.
Reboot by pressing the Power Button and the Call button and the Menu Button.
After rebooting sign in to your Google account.
2.Rooting The HTC Dream or T-Mobile G1
Once at the Home screen, open the keyboard and press the Enter key twice.
Type telnetd and press Enter.( The Contacts screen will come up, just ignore it. There will be no indication that you did it right)
Now go to the Android Market, and install Telnet by ClockworkMod.
(Alternatively, you can install Telnet from the device's browser. First, go to Settings » Applications » and check Unknown Sources. Then, from the device's browser, go to http://koushikdutta.blurryfox.com/G1/Telnet.apk. Wait for the file to download, then tap on icon to install it)
3.Installing a Custom Recovery Image
There are two custom recovery images available for the Dream: Amon_Ra's and ClockworkMod.
Amon_Ra's Recovery: Recommended
Download the latest version of Amon_Ra's Recovery.
Amon_Ra's Recovery 1.7.0 : http://cmw.22aaf3.com/dream_magic/dream/recovery/recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-cyan.img
Rename Amon_Ra's Recovery Image to recovery.img
Copy the recovery.img to the root of the SD card (NOT in any folders).
Open Telnet. Press connect to server.
Type : flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
Press enter.
Once Amon_Ra's Recovery is finished installing, you will see # # on the screen below the line you've just typed.
Amon_Ra's Recovery should now be installed on the HTC Dream.
4.Rooting Complete

Installing CyanogenMod 6 Stable (Android 2.2.1 Froyo)
1.Flashing Radio
Download the latest radio
T-Mobile / US : http://cmw.22aaf3.com/dream_magic/common/radio/dream_magic.radio-2.22.23.02-signed.zip
Non US : http://cmw.22aaf3.com/dream_magic/common/radio/dream_magic.radio-2.22.19.26i-signed.zip
Place the radio.zip file (for example : dream_magic.radio-2.22.23.02-signed.zip) on the root of the device's SD card.
Boot into Recovery by holding the Home and Power button while the device boots.
Scroll down to Flash zip from sdcard.
Select the radio update.zip (for example : dream_magic.radio-2.22.23.02-signed.zip)
Follow the instuction to flash it to your phone.
The HTC Dream will reboot during this process.
Once the installation has finished, select Reboot system now.
2.Flashing SPL

Make sure that you have a full battery - as in green LED - during the steps below and at no point remove power from the device (i.e. no battery pulls!).
Download the latest SPL
DangerSPL : http://cmw.22aaf3.com/dream_magic/common/hboot/dream_magic.hboot-1.33.2005-signed.zip
Place the SPL.zip file (for example : dream_magic.hboot-1.33.2005-signed.zip) on the root of the device's SD card.
Boot into Recovery by holding the Home and Power button while the device boots.
Scroll down to Flash zip from sdcard.
Follow the instuction to flash it to your phone.
Once the installation has finished, select Reboot system now.
3.Wipe
After rebooting for install the SPL update, select Wipe.
Wipe the following :
Wipe data / factory reset
Wipe cache
Once the installation has finished, select Reboot system now.
4.Flashing CyanogenMod Rom
Download the CyanogenMod 6 stable (for your phone) and also Google apps (Gapps) : http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Gapps#Google_Apps
Place both the Cyanogen and Gapps.zip files on the root of the device's SD card (for example : update-cm-6.1.0-DS-signed.zip / gapps-mdpi-tiny-20101020-signed.zip)
Boot into Recovery by holding the Home and Power button while the device boots.
Scroll down to Flash zip from sdcard.
Now flash CyanogenMod Rom (for example : update-cm-6.1.0-DS-signed)
Once the installation has finished, select Flash zip from sdcard again.
flash Google apps (for example : gapps-mdpi-tiny-20101020-signed.zip)(optional)
Once the installation has finished, select Reboot system now.
5.Installation Complete
Enjoy it, also you can flash any other Roms (but I recommend CyanogenMod 6 stable is the best for G1)

trish, 23 Jun 2012I can't figure out where the sd card goes..can someone plz help?First, Slide open your T-Mobile G1 so that the keypad is exposed.then Locate the microSD card's storage slot. This slot is located on the side of the G1 near the green "Call" key. When the phone is open, you can see that the microSD card slot cover wraps around to the inside of the phone near the keypad.

i recommend to install CyangoenMod Rom, that's so fast & Stable (V6.1.0-DS - Android 2.2.1 Froyo) & have no Bugs (at least less than other Roms)
how to install it ?
if that's your first time to flash new Rom to your G1, then your phone is not rooted.
to do this (root)

after that, if your phone need to flash DangerSPL
you can go there (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Dream:DangerSPL)
after Root & install SPL (if needed)
you must download the Rom & Gapps to flash it to your phone
go there to download CyanogenMod Rom & Gapps (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Gapps#Google_Apps)
Now enjoy it, your G1 is so fast & stable & you can do every thing ...

i was installing a new Android on my HTC G1, i thought i brick,
it didn't start up just G1 Logo , i tried Home + Power nothing just G1 Logo , and Camera + Power also G1 Logo , and didn't turn off , i have to take out the battery.
