The G1 is awful. Compared to an ancient Nokia flip-phone I've carried for years, it is neanderthal. 1. It cannot access Tmobile "My Albums" photobank. 2. It cannot access Family Allowance sliders for managing minutes. 3. It cannot download an sms photo to the phone. If you can get it to work at all,(Photos with embedded messages from very basic T Mobile photo phones totally baffle the phone and the Android experts) You must forward the phone to your Gmail account. And 4. OMG when you sync up with Gmail if you had an account for a while all your lame email contacts will push all your phone contacts off into the ether somewhere. 5. But the absolutely worst design feature by far is mounting the tiny delete button on the keyboard adjacent to the SEND button. Try to correct a typo or rethink a bit of poorly chosen words and a fat or misguided finger SENDS the mistake quicker then you can say G1! My old Nokia allowed me to set a timed "silence" or Meeting" ring tone for a predetermined time 2 hours for a movie, 8 hours for work. what have you... With G1, it is silent or Not. period No timers no choices. and the volume..there is none. you lay the phone on it's back to protect the prcious touch screen and you are laying it on the speaker! If you have a hearing problem or need more volume in a noisy environment, a mall sports event or outdoors... forget about it.
It can tell you the air quality in your neghborhood but it dials your least favorite person at just the wrong time all by itself. It sets errant alarms for no reason and dies at the worst times. This thing had to have been rushed to market with no prior end user testing.
Simply put, a thousand software androids working with unlimited time could not fix the hardware and T-Mobile interface problems this thing carries. T-Mobile's response "Yeah we forgot to tell ya that, but we know about the problems...and it is okay because some of our other phones don't work with T mobile web features either. Oh... but next month it comes out in a white cased version. so look cool and explain why it is the next great thing.
Remember you only have 14 days to discover what this thing won't do. And don't expect a user manual. T-Mobile and Android refuse to include a manual beyond "Getting started" which just hypes features with no real instructions. The full 141 page tome is not supplied with the unit still lacks clear directions for some features and pitfalls and it is buried online. I'm a fairly bright guy and I like technology more than most but this thing will make you feel dumb and have you scratching you head in an instant at every turn.
My old Nokia is getting it's SIM card back next week.

Nelly, 10 Nov 2008For those of you who think the G1 sucks lets talk about how imperfect the iphone which in turn... moreIt's a techies phone.. Sure it's great at some things, and probably does beat the Iphone, but at the end of the day, i am a phone user rather than a techie ? I need it to be comfortable to hold when i'm typing a message, something that i personally find a problem with the G1, The battery lasts longer when certain apps & functions are turned off !!! that kind of defeats the object of having these functions on the phone, cannot plug in the headphones and charger at the same time, which on this phone is a must as the battery dies very quick when playing music. BUT apart from being poorly designed with a real bad battery, your right.. it's great ;-)
For those of you who think the G1 sucks lets talk about how imperfect the iphone which in turn has a lot of the same features. It lacks flash for its camera and it has a lower resolution it has multi-touch G1 has an actual keyboard. Battery life is excellent some settings out of box kill the battery and dont need to be on. Next iphone has way slower 3g speeds than the G1. The iphone which is so polished doesnt even have copy, cut, or paste in its browser, lets not forget it locked to holy hell. Can you say open source its the greatest, try that with your iphone either it dies in a plume of smoke or survives to see another day. This by far was a good competitor to the iphone, unlike other phones i.e. Samsung Instinct.... Wake up battery life on the iphone is the same or very close but, Google/HTC/Tmobile dont want an exact copy of the iphone they need something new and different for the people who just arent iphone friendly. P.S. I love My G1 Have Had It Almost A Month And Its Better Than My Friends Iphone 3G He Cries When We Look Up Sports Scores On The Go Cause I Give Him The Numbers Lmao!!!! Look @ The Advantages.
damn losers can't use a phone right, if you would please read the user manual before complaining.
whoever that thinks that the G1 is to complicated for them are just complaining because they can't manage to use them right, i guess it's just too good for you
this phone has many good thoings but not somany godd / bad ones too. it inmpress new but once they did, i now have. nice
ccb, 08 Nov 2008I returned my g1 also. The battery life totally sucked! Did they charge you a $10 restocking fee?No Restocking fee in the UK, As i bought from T-mobile direct rasther than in a shop ? something to do with distance selling rules in the UK means you have upto 14 days (might be 7) to change your mind and return the item, Plus i'm a T-Mobile business customer so they tend to look after me a little better :-)

I have returned my G1 to T-Mobile under the 14 day return scheme as i think it is a very poor design.
Firstly it feels cheap and plastic, the keyboard mechanism is clunky not smooth & i think quickly will break.
It is very awkward to use, for texting the position of the keyboard is all wrong, the camera is pointless as there are no settings for it meaning it is virtually impossible to take a good photo. bluetooth headset support only, Very Very poor battery life.. I could go on but basically i think you will get the picture..
This is a MUCH OVER HYPED phone, i'm sure in time Android will prove to be great, but at the moment there is nothing to make it stand out from the crowd, and combined with a handset that also is not very special, means this phone is actually a very poor 1st effort from Google / T-Mobile
the battery life starts out bad, but actually gets better the more you use the phone. originally got mine two weeks ago, and was averaging bout 3hrs of use between charges, up to 6-7hrs now.
My only complaint is with the camera. no settings. NO SETTINGS! cant do anything that even a razr can do. hopefully someone will develop a patch to allow sepia tones, change picture quality & resolution and have video record capabilities
is it possible to download the android OS onto another phone like HTC touch HD (or maybe xperia x1)? if so how?
