So who put up a picture of the ugly ass white one? Seriously? White phones suck! Put the cool looking one up!
dave, 22 Oct 2008Mine arrived two days ago, on the 20th. I'm in the dfw area and I've had about 24 hours of act... moreYes, it seems like at this point in time you get notifications only for incoming Gmail emails. Everything else needs to be checked manually.
Also, in order to get all your incoming chat messages, you need to exit the session by pressing the home button. If you don't and your phone locks, the new incoming messages will show up as notifications, with incomplete sentence. If you press the notification, it will take you to the active chat session and the new incoming messages will not be visible.
I would suggest that all hands-on goes also to the Android Community (http://androidcommunity.com/forums/ or http://androidcommunity.com/forums/blog.php).
All in all, I am happy I have G1. I love it and its potential.
I've been wanting as much of an all in one device as I could find. In the process, learned the difference between UPS "physical" and "logical" locational scans. The former being when the driver actually scans the package in his posession. The latter is where the UPS computer "thinks" the package "should" be. Be aware when looking at the tracking list on the UPS website that it may be a combination of both, and, as an agent told me on the phone, the website tracking list " ... doesn't mean anything." Only when it shows up at your door does its location matter.
Mine arrived two days ago, on the 20th. I'm in the dfw area and I've had about 24 hours of actual hands on experience. I have to say that although it's shiny and pretty and all that, I'm quickly becoming bitterly disappointed.
1. The phone refuses to notify me of new incoming email messages. I have two spop accounts set up, and although the "notify" and "check every 5 minutes" boxes are checked, the phone neither checks every 5 minutes nor notifies me when it does check and finds mail. Based on my mail server logs it manages to check in once an hour on average, and it doesn't do this on any predictable schedule. To get my mail I need to open the mail app, and open my inbox, at which point it logs into the spop server and gets new messages. So far I have not been "notified" of a single email message
2. There is no way to manage more than one message at a time. I cannot select multiple messages for deletion or quickly perform any action on multiple emails.
3. I cannot copy text from one message into another.
4. I cannot select email addresses out of an email message and add them to my contacts.
The mail app needs serious usability work
1. Four times in the last 24 hours I have gone to either YahooIM or AIM to find that the phone has logged me out.
2. Both the Yahoo and AIM apps aren't synching with their respective servers. Users who are available appear as not available on the phone, AIM messages from the server that notify me for example, that I'm logged in multiple times do not appear on the phone.
3. The phone does not notify you when friends become available or log off. Other features that you'd find in any other IM program (pidgen, adium.. whatever) are absent here. I cannot, for example give my friends different notification sounds.
The reliability problems give the phone a kludgy feel when it comes to IM. I don't know if people are getting my messages or vice versa, so I end up asking them if they got my message, sometimes they do sometimes they dont.
Sms is much more reliable than the other communication options. The thread/chat interface is nice too. Since I've been using the phone all of my SMS messages have been delivered, and only one message that was sent to me has yet to arrive (sent 12 hours ago). Perhaps this is because sms is using the traditional cell phone networks instead of 3g? The phone notifies you of incoming SMS, but I can't give different friends different ringtones.
I can't seem to get the phone to work with any of my wifi sources, (home, office, sprint EVDO+cradlepoint). The phone will connect to the AP, and has negotiated everything from WPA2-PSK to open security, and has been configured statically and dynamically via dhcp. Once connected to an AP it seems to not have any connectivity at all. Web pages give the built-in error page, the mail app throws connection errors etc..
It's a pretty phone that isn't working well. I think some of this has to do with tmo's relatively new 3g network, and some of it has to do with the brand-new OS. I'm not sure what to say about the UI oversites, it should be far more feature-full than it is, IMO the actual functionality is beyond spartan. It's great that it plays youtube and has a touch screen and all, but first and foremost the g1 is a communication tool for me, and right now my rock-solid sidekick is kicking it's ass in terms of being able to talk to my co-workers and friends.
gsmarena, update ur records, this phone has now been released!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic phone! Wonderful apps, brilliant YouTube quality, very easy to use. It's a whole new universe!
My husband's is black, mine is chocolate. Could not chose color when ordered but happy with what I got.
One of the few things that I'm missing is a Cyrillic keyboard but I am sure someone will develop an app for this and will upload it at Android Marketplace pretty soon.
Panda, 21 Oct 2008i got mine on the launch party and i isnt release till tomrrow so id like to know how you guys... moreDepends when you placed order and how close you live to the location where they shipped the phones from. Mine shipped from KY, I'm in PA, took 3 business days to get it.
The pix don't do it justice. I have mine too, looks waaaay better than I expected. Fantastic call sound quality! Will say more when I play with it a little.
Anonymous, 21 Oct 2008this phone has not been released and no one has it, the launch date is soon haha some people can be so damn cynical. trust me, i have my G1

when are they gonna add new cities and states to be included in street view??? and when can we expect new apps?? i dont even see the seismograph(sp) one!
on a good note, the Locale app is crazy! i can automatically adjust my settings based on my location! i set my univesity location to silent, so imma test this out today =)

Anonymous, 19 Oct 2008hey mo! As far as I heard if u work for t-mobile u can't have it another 30 days, is i... moreA lot of employees used their families' accounts and upgrades to get one, also last week for about 2-4 hours employees were able to order the brown one but it sold out a few hours after it was posted.
Great phone not as many features as my I900 but much smoother operation, street view is great. Page view on the internet is much smoother than the Opera on the I900. So far I think it is a great phone.
I had a fiddle with this handset this morning and it is , IMENSE, the street view on google maps is in a league of its own, who ever came up with that idea " well done" the handset overal will give the iphone a run for its money especially as the G1 is constantly connected to the internet. I cant wait to get mine its going to to awsome.
i got mine on the launch party and i isnt release till tomrrow so id like to know how you guys got yours early. i also preordered mine and i wont get mine till tomorrow around 5ish. but for video yall you have to do it click on ur music and it gives you the option to play it threw the video player or you could have gotten the free app from android market if you had the phone early.
I just got my phone in the mail today!!!! (i ordered it the first day that preorders were available, 9-23 i think)
ive been playing with it for the past few hours so i'll give my own brief user review...
-multitasking is smooth and easy, does not drop calls, freeze, or show ANY signs of lagging
-some functions and settings feel a bit complicated (i had a SEk850i), but it is a smart phone, so some hands on time is needed
-the web page doesnt scroll as "smoothly" as iphone(i own an itouch), but other than that it is just as easy to use, and it even loads faster than iphone (based on WIFI, i dont have 3g in my city)
-window shade is HELLAH useful(love this feature)
-touch screen every bit as responsive as iphone (yes ive actually played with many of my friends 3g iphones)
-phone does feel hot when charging, and when i started up the phone, then it gradually cooled down the more i used with it, weird...
i'm open to questions, but i warn you, im not a techy at all....just like nice phones =)
A., 20 Oct 2008Re: UK and USA standards:
As long as your network is GSM 850 or 900, or 1800, or 1900 and y... moreThanks a lot for answering my question. Highly appreciate it. The UK setting for Tmobile is UMTS (900+2100) + GSM (900+1800)
Which means a USA G1 should work just fine over here in the UK :D
Thanks once again.
.., 20 Oct 2008What is the difference between a UK Tmobile G1 and a USA Tmobile G1? I live in the UK and a... moreSpoke to T-Mobile USA. They told me the phone comes with account pre-sets (something to do with internet access and Google, can't tell what exactly). There is one more thing: G1s' Google talk is free of charge for both incoming and outgoing messages. W/ my BBerry Pearl those went toward my 400/month SMS's and I had to pay for any over 400. This is yet another advantage of having G1 and a Google account associated with it. I am not sure you can have the same type of account with other phones and don't know if the same applies to UK accounts. My advice: talk to T-Mobile UK.
