Weekly poll: what do you think of the Oppo Reno13 and Reno13 Pro?

Weekly poll Oppo

Like clockwork, Oppo unveiled the second Reno generation for 2024. The Reno13 series comes half a year after the 12-series and a year (almost exactly to the day) after the 11-series. These are the models for China, the global Reno13 series should be out in January, judging by the Reno11 timeline.

So, what’s new? This time both models are powered by the same chipset – a Dimensity 8350 that is essentially identical to the 8300. That’s a downgrade for the Pro as the 12-series model used a flagship Dimensity 9200+. Also, the vanilla model doesn’t have a telephoto camera (the tele module was cut from the global Reno12, anyway).

Starting with the Oppo Reno13 Pro, it’s larger than before with a 6.83” display (up from 6.7”) and has a suitably larger battery, 5,800mAh. That’s an 800mAh increase over the 12 Pro and now the 80W wired charging is joined by 50W wireless. A few things stay the same, e.g. the fingerprint reader is still an optical unit. But there are definite upgrades, e.g. the telephoto module has a longer 85mm lens in front of the 50MP sensor (vs. 47mm 50MP tele on the 12 Pro).

On the flip side, the Oppo Reno13 goes smaller with a 6.59” display (down from 6.7” on the Reno12) but still manages to pack a larger battery – 5,600mAh (up from 5,000mAh). The charging is the same at 80W wired-only. Like we said, there’s no tele module. However, both the Reno13 and Reno13 Pro are rated IP69, compared to the somewhat basic IP65 of the Reno12 duo.

Here are the prices compared to the Reno12 series – they cost basically the same as before, the big change this generation is the introduction of a 1TB storage tier.

16GB/1TB - CNY 3,800 - CNY 4,500

Presumably, this means that the pricing of the global Reno13 series will not change either, but we’ll have to wait on an official confirmation for that.

The Reno13 duo is facing some stiff competition. Also new this week are the Redmi K80 and K80 Pro – these could go global under the Poco brand. The vanilla K80 starts at CNY 2,500 but is equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, not a mid-range Dimensity. The Redmi K80 Pro starts at CNY 3,700 for a 12/256GB unit and it brings the Snapdragon 8 Elite. Both have QHD+ 6.67” displays, which are sharper than the Oppo displays. And they have huge batteries, 6,550mAh on the vanilla and 6,000mAh on the Pro.

The Realme GT 7 Pro costs CNY 3,600 for the base 12/256GB model in China and it recently went global with an MSRP of €1,000 (down to €805 for Black Friday). The global variant has a smaller battery than the Chinese one (5,800mAh vs. 6,500mAh), but both variants are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite and have 6.78” LTPO OLED displays.

Is the Oppo Reno13 duo outgunned? The Oppo Reno13 Pro certainly has a lot to prove to the competition and even to the Reno12 Pro. What do you think, if/when the Reno13 Pro becomes available near you, would you buy one?

What about the vanilla Oppo Reno13? That one is cheaper and has the exact same chipset as the Pro – but is that enough?

Reno has put a lot of cost on the appearance, with a metal frame and a glass battery cover, but unfortunately, the hardware experience is outdated.
