Xiaomi might have hit the jackpot with the latest Redmi series, but the company keeps pushing. The latest tech that it wants to bring to its midrangers, is the under-display fingerprint scanner. Reports from XDA-Developers revealed at least three new phones with the FOD technology (fingerprint-on-display) were spotted for hardware testing, two of them with codenames suggesting Android One.
They are most likely the Xiaomi Mi A3 and Xiaomi Mi A3 Lite and one of their Chinese versions.
The three phones are codenamed “pyxis”, “bamboo_sprout”, and “cosmos_sprout”, with the _sprout suffix seen in the devices on the Android One program. The third one is lacking it, meaning it could be the successor of the Xiaomi Mi 6X, or Xiaomi Mi 7X.
Having an under-display fingerprint scanner technology is not that expensive anymore. Companies like vivo, Oppo, and Samsung implemented it in their latest midrangers, meaning we could see an optical scanner underneath an OLED panel on a Redmi smartphone very soon. Currently, only the flagship series Mi 8 and Mi 9 have the tech, as well as the latest gaming powerhouse Black Shark 2.
