The store rep claimed Bose TWS SQ would be better than Bose wireless SQ (with some wire), but I played Gangnam Style with both, and found no appreciable difference. Pretty lame when you pay so high premium.
But you may be right when you say the call quality just works. Outside the Apple ecosystem, pairing would probably be required, but that's not a big deal. The only major downside I see is the design of Airpods. If battery dies out of warranty, you must buy a new one; even Apple cannot replace the batteries!

Airpods just work!
Imagine that all you ever had to do was to put the airpods in your ears and they are connected and ready to go. No pairing, no connection losses, no waiting to turn on, no waiting no nothing. Take them out of the case, put them in your ears, that's it.
If you have a mac, an ipad, an apple watch they automatically connect to all. They just work brilliantly.
And apple isn't "surviving" they are THRIVING. Remember when it was the first trillion dollar company? Well now Apple is worth 1.4 TRILLION that's $1,400,000,000,000.
