I wonder if it's tied into any stock transfer to the CCP? It seems a thing to happen in China - Billionaires suddenly "resign" to "get back to their roots" or whatever, and the govt (or members of within) is simultaneously "gifted" with a significant stake in the firm.

This guy was the real spirit in Oneplus, he embodied the never settle slogan and built the company. Pete Lau is just a puppet for OPPO and BBK Electronics. Carl Pei probably noticed Oneplus is going in the wrong direction with the OP5/T update fiasco, the surge in prices trying to compete with Apple and Samsung head to head and wants to distantiate himself. HE does right. Good luck Carl.

AnonD-836132, 17 Oct 2020Don't think he left all by himself. He was either kicked or was pressurised to leave. He ... moreYep, he was kicked, because he was trying to create the OnePlus X again, and then Pete arrived and yelled "WHY!" and so Carl started to work on a OnePlus Y instead, but clearly, Pete wasn't laughing, and so he said okay you're fired, and so he left to create his own venture and we now what the first product will be called i.e CarlPlus Y, which is Carly

Don't think he left all by himself. He was either kicked or was pressurised to leave. He just started the Nord brand few months back. Why he would leave just in 6 months after starting something new?

One of the reasons could be the covid situation.

Hopefully he will bring new flagship killer in the market soon. Now that one plus has moved towards commercialisation there is vaccume for good mid range stock android devices which pixel cannot fill alone. This gets proved by pixel 4a getting out of stock in minutes in india and people are not satisfied with Nord.
In an hypothetical case if google were to bring 4a and 4a XL at reasonable price in india one plus would have been finished.

By far the best feature of these phones is the active dev community.

Oneplus, just like majority of android makers, has settled to making just one of those android bricks released monthly anyways.
