The iPhone Duo may not have a visible crease, but the display is soft in that area

The part of the iPhone Duo display that is above the hinge is squishy – this can be seen in a video originally posted by Weibo user Kang that was shared by Ice Universe. This is not entirely unexpected, but it’s still interesting to see.

The perfectionists over at Apple couldn’t have a crease on their first-ever foldable. And to their credit, they engineered a solution – the crease is essentially invisible. This doesn’t mean that the strip over the hinge has solid backing, though.

So, if you push it with your finger, it depresses slightly. Worse, Kang says that when pressing the screen surface in that area it can develop wrinkles. It seems to snap back into a smooth surface when you move your finger, but this is something to keep an eye on as it may become a problem for long-term durability. Still, the screen protector for the inner display is replaceable, so maybe it will be an easy fix.

BREAKING!A shocking new discovery about the iPhone Duo's foldable display! According to Weibo user Kang, the screen around the iPhone Duo's crease is surprisingly SOFT to the touch. When pressed with a finger, the surface can even develop visible WRINKLES! This is something we've never seen mentioned in previous reviews of foldable phones. Even more interesting, Kang claims this behavior is common across multiple units. Could this be related to Apple's rumored variable-thickness ultra-thin glass (UTG), with a thinner central folding region and thicker surrounding areas? If so, Apple may have adopted a radically different approach to managing stress around the fold. The engineering behind this display could be far more interesting than we initially thought. Kang also says that multiple Duo phones were tested and they react the same way, so this isn’t an issue with just one unit.

Ice speculates that this may have something to do with variable thickness glass, which is what Apple is rumored to be using on the iPhone Duo. Corning unveiled variable thickness glass (Corning VtG) a couple of years ago. This leaves a thinner strip of glass over the hinge to make it easy to bend but makes the rest of the glass thicker to make it more resilient.

“This design allows for a device with both effortless bendability at the hinge area and added display durability when compared with a monolithic thickness piece of glass due to the thicker glass on the wings,” wrote Corning in its press release. Of course, Apple hasn’t confirmed whether it is using VtG or not.
