Xiaomi Redmi Android Announcement

Xiaomi is following the Redmi 12 from last month with a 5G version that just debuted in India. The Redmi 12 5G is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 but is otherwise fairly similar to its 4G sibling. The new phone is also identical to the China-only Redmi Note 12R, except for the selfie camera.

The Redmi 12 5G is built around a 6.79” LCD with a 90 Hz refresh rate and Full HD+ resolution. The 5,000 mAh battery with 18W charging support is also shared with the Redmi 12.

The camera setup is different, though, with a 50 MP f/1.8 main unit and a 2 MP f/2.4 macro camera instead of the 8 MP ultrawide unit on the 4G phone. At the front, the Redmi 12 5G has an 8 MP f/2.0 camera with 1.12µm pixels.

The Redmi 12 5G runs MIUI 14 on top of Android 13, and the design is inspired by crystals and gemstones. It offers a glass back, which is the first ever for the Redmi number series, and that brings the thickness to just below 8.2 mm. There is also basic IP53 protection against dust and water splashes.

Redmi 12 5G arrives in three colors - Jade Black, Pastel Blue, and Moonstone Silver.

The 4/128 GB version costs INR 10,999 ($133/€120) with the early-bird discounts of INR 1,000 ($12/€10) applied. The 6/128 GB is INR 12,499 ($150/€140), while the 8/256 GB ups the price to INR 14,499 ($175/€160). Sales will begin this Friday, August 4, at 12 PM in India, and the Redmi 12 5G can be purchased from the Xiaomi online store, Amazon, and local offline partners.

A good CPU is absolutely required if you want to run the OS and apps that are always getting heavier and more bloated without stutters and lag spikes years down the line.
