The main process, similar to what you mentioned is to simply press 'contacts' scroll to name and select, and simply press the 'envelope icon' and this will bring up the SMS text box...actually, this is already a shorter process than what you've mentioned.
Another option, good for people you SMS frequently, is to add a shortcut for the contact on your home screen. Once set up, you simply press the persons icon and press the envelope icon....2 steps.
You can simplify things further by adding a direct message shortcut to your home screen. To set up simply choose 'add' from the home screen options then select 'short cuts' then select 'direct message' and choose the contact. Now you'll have an icon for that contact that you simply press and you'll be taken directly to the SMS text box...one step.
You can also use voice command for SMS as well as speak your message and SG2 will type it. This feature was surprisingly accurate when I tried it, though I would only use it for short simple messages.
Please keep in mind. The SG2 in quite flexible when it comes to setting things up. Take some time and see what options are out there and see what exactly the phone has to offer. If it still doesn't suit your personal needs then you'll have to find the phone that best suits you based on your usage. Even though some may come close, no phone out there will satisfy everyone according to their needs and usage.

Dear Galaxy S2 users,
I am planning to buy a smartphone but am confused between SGS2 and Xperia arc. I have heard that the call quality (earpiece) of the SGS2 is not that good, while the call quality (earpiece) of the Arc is outstanding. Please comment on this. Call quality through earpiece is very important for me.

I've just moved to an SII from a Sony W995. I'm a heavy user and used ActiveSync on my W995 for contacts and calendar sync with my MS Outlook contacts and calendars, I switched off email as it became tedious receiving it on the phone, I prefer to deal with email at my desk on my PC. The calendar on the W995 is pretty good and does everything I need. And I rely heavily on my calendar to organise my life - when I have my children stay with me, school events, birthdays, MOT, car tax, payments etc. I have a complicated and busy life. The W995 is a fab phone and is rock solid reliable.
Now the S2. Build quality better than I had been lead to expect from reviews, fast, fabulous screen and amazing apps. However ... and it's a BIG however: In pratice it is a very impractical phone with several faults. I compare all my experiences with using the W995. Texting - painful, the touch screen keyboard is a pain if you need to go back to edit. Left and right arrows keys (D-pad on W995) are a dream. Very fiddly on the S2. Plus the number of touch strokes to get into the text are many more. On the W995 it's simply press Address book, scroll/key to the contact, press options | Send message | Select and you're into the body of the message. Plus with shortcuts set up there can be less keystrokes than this. Similary, press the up arrow and you're into the calendar.
So far my S2 has crashed three times (I've only had it for five days). I have dialled calls where the callee has picked up but can't hear me and I can't hear them. I've killed all running apps to ensure minimal impact on resources. The only fix has been a power down and restart. My Plantronics Voyager Pro blue tooth earpiece (briliant in its own right) partners readily with the S2, however calls do not come through to it. Speech quality can be erratic and dalek-like. It's also possible to make a call and lose the screen it was on so you can't control the call, e.g. hang up.
So it's a love hate relationship so far. I do love everything the phone can do - truly incredible apps, however it's practical use as a phone for calls and texting is very painful. I am hoping I will get used to this phone as I want to keep it. However, my W995 was so easy to use single handedly. Incoming text messages just get displayed. Calendar appointments are displayed and alerted easily. On the S2 they are not so obviously displayed or alerted even with widgets.
Even sat nav on the W995 was good although much better on the S2. I love my W995 but I miss it loads already. And the battery on my S2 is almost dead at 3pm after very limited use today, the W995 would be going strong still by now.
With music, the S2 decided to stop working complaining the music was the wrong format. A re-boot of the phone and it is happy again.
So I am in a real dilemma, do I stay with the troublesome but fantastic S2 or try to go back to my W995 (I need a new one because my old one is very worn, has been dropped many times onto the pavement and I think is now suffering as a result)? I'm not sure. Smartphones are the way of the future but nothing can ever replace the positive tactile experience of using a keypad and navigation (i.e. left/right/up/down) keys. My W995 only ever froze once since I got it 18 months ago.
One key press and I can voice record. I can also record phone calls, very handy.
So I am squirming with indecision at the moment. Reliable, practical, brilliant W995 or unreliable, awkward, stuning S2?

Is everyone here happy with the SG2? My sister doesnt really like it. She liked the previous galaxy better. This one is too big, feels too plasticky. Agree or not?
it has been an experience of a lifetime. it just cant get better than this.. a phone worth every cent
Here comes samsung galaxy Z, a downgraded version of galaxy S II.
