Apple also highlighted some app trends for the past year. Developers overwhelmingly went towards wellness apps, with Shine aimed at mental health. Explain Everything Whiteboard was a tool for teachers to “reinvent the classroom experience” - it is a cloud-based collaboration tool where groups of students can work together on projects even when everyone’s at home.

Pokemon Go saw a surge in use when people were having their daily outings, while the ShareTheMeal app by the United Nations World Food Programme brought 87 million meals to kids across the world.

To commemorate these accomplishments, for the first time Apple brought a physical award, inspired by the App Store icon. It has the logo on the front, engraving of the name of the winner on the back, and Apple said it is made of 100% recycled aluminum.
