EU welcomes the microUSB as a standard phone charger socket

Good idea. And yes, 3.5mm and memory cards next. Well done EU! I just noticed I have too many cables and chargers around...
@Steve: LOL, Apple sold like 10-15 million phones and for example Nokia sold over a billion so far, and then there's other makers too. I think iPhones should be standardized to Nokia's BL-5C battery (3 dollars on eBay).

Apple should have demanded that all the other companies that wish to remain in business switch over to Apple's superior connectivity device. It makes no sense for Apple to compromise. They have the new iphone out. It will dominate all other phones as always. In just two more years, Apple will most likely have over 50% of the market. This just makes no sense at all. It's like forcing Ferrari to use wheels made from GM.

It's about time... Now all they need to do is standardize memory cards and headphone jacks (3.5 mm hopefully). As long as it doesn't go too far, for example standardizing OS or screen size/dimesions. Variety is good, but not at the cost of convenience.

Personally I think this is an amazing idea, I don't understand why all phones companies don't just do this world wide. Its one thing that'll do everything. In my home we finally all have phones with the Micro USB ports, and now we've got like tons of stuff from older phones that don't work. I used to only buy certain Samsung models because I didn't want to have to spend the extra $30 for a new charger, when the one I had works fine. This way its one maybe two cables for everything. I think they should also make wall chargers like Apple builds theirs with the attatachable Adapter peice that plugs into the wall and the USB cable into that. One Cable for everything.

Apple have said there's no way they're ditching their cable - so they'll probably just include a connector - just one more thing to get lost!

Why have a cable charger at all?? INDUCTION charging is the way forward! Simply placing your phone on any induction pad would charge it... not to mentioned iPods, MP3 players, hand held consoles etc. Anything that has an induction coil built in!!
