Apple should really have gone with a full top bezel rather than having a notch. Their gesture- based navigation is ok, but I think, they really tried too hard for their 10th anniversary iphone to look unique by having that notch. It turned out having a unique look, but many find that notch ugly, and very hard to not notice while using the phone. And without the notch, not only it would be easier to look at, they wouldnt have the trouble of adapting their os/ui/apps, etc. to it, and that goes to the app developers as well.

I sense big marketing strategy change here. I feel that Apple is now competing with Samsung to be the most premium brand and they want to maintain a maximum price gap between their flagship phones (which is extremely important for any premium brand). Also they want to increase makret share too so their older models like 7 and previous are available at very competitive prices in many markets. Increasing price premium and customer base both are very important and I feel that they know what they are doing. The only place where they are struggling is the design otherwise that are still at top of the game. That have successfully differentiated their brand by introducing face ID which is also a smart move. Apple has out enormous marketing knowledge in this change and they will be able to real it's benefit next year

For me There is only these two things which are holding iPhones to be perfect - that top notch and big camera hump other than this I think it's a near perfect phone.

If they will be making that much bigger phones then I really don't see why that notch has to be there. A very thin bezel at it's place will be better. May be they think that as usual industry will copy them and notch will become cool. But if it doesn't happen and companies like xiaomi end up making better bezel less phones (which is highly likely) then they would definitely look like fool next year.
