Anonymous, 10 Jul 2018The user is free to choose. It is just pre-installed. I use Opera instead of ChromeBeing able to install another app is not enough. There is so much crap on phones nowadays. The EU is all about generating revenue by fining American companies, but if they really wanted to solve the problem, they would make it a requirement that all apps may be uninstalled by the user. I don't really care if EU users are to lazy to install a different search or browser app (1% according to EU Commissioner for competition Margrethe Vestager), but when there is 500 MB of rap apps permanently on your phone, it's pretty limiting. I'm going to eventually get into ADB and back them out, but it's been about 18 months and I still haven't gotten to it. Might be buying a different brand next time. I already gave up on Samsung due to their usurping of my memory.
Andy, 10 Jul 2018I guess the difference is iOS isn't open source and Android isI believe it most be the same about Apple and all others. like Samsung is pushing people to use Bixby (sh!ttiest thing I've ever seen) so it must have an end too.
AnonD-558092, 11 Jul 2018Making up a new OS from scratch is a tedious process. And then even if you manage to make an a... moreNope, but Nokia and now the so called jolla, which was actually meego could do it. That OS is crazy all it need is a proper push in the right direction. Of course nobody wants to take off. It does not do slavery work for "the corporations". it is actually a system of times when companies were innovationg and were not dragged down by money hungry/data hungy capitalists.
Note7 owner, 10 Jul 2018If the EU or any manufacturers using Android doesn’t like it, they should go and make their ow... moreMaking up a new OS from scratch is a tedious process. And then even if you manage to make an acceptable replacement to Android, you have to make consumers to adopt it. And for that you need some serious OEM support and app developers support too. MS failed at almost all stages of that process. I don't think a government can do it well
franz.alex, 10 Jul 2018Reminds me of Microsoft being required to give users an option to choose their default browser... moreIn that case you must prove that the OEM additions cause a monopoly. Not sure THAT much Samsung users use Samsung Internet instead of Chrome. Then again, that must be something backed up by solid statistics.
"better for the consumer to enjoy the product as well as give the competition a fair chance"
What a load of crap.
Making google services be removed from the os will mean the product will not function how people have come to expect from google software and that will mean google will get a bad name because they have fallen and their os can't do half the things it once did that made the use of android so good.
And thus this all will only make things worse for consumers and for from better
Amenois, 10 Jul 2018"The other side argues that Google needs to make money back somehow so it can continue to keep... moreIt's sad that people don't see the bigger picture here. Since Android is free, people think that Google is running a charity. Google already has monopoly in certain markets.
Guys please understand this, monopoly is very dangerous. Google has already become aggressive, trying to eat away other markets. If any organization like Google becomes too big, it can influence a whole lot of things. No matter what kind of intentions they have right now, no one can predict the future. It's already scary how much Google influence our lives right now.
Abhi D, 10 Jul 2018Pathetic pathetic ruling! Google is a private organisation, they can do whatever they wish to ... moreIt's funny that you say "Samsung forces their browser and dozens of unnecessary apps down the throat of users", what about Google? My Redmi S3 Prime has Xiaomi's bloat as well as Google's bloat. If you can't remove an unnecessary app from your phone then that's a bloat, it doesn't matter if it's Google product.
Anonymous, 10 Jul 2018So long Google Play Store is kept for people who wish to download apps.Would it kill you to use an alternative store?
Kiyasuriin, 10 Jul 2018That's what I do. Lineage ftw!Yes most stable custom ROM(official build)
Andy, 10 Jul 2018I guess the difference is iOS isn't open source and Android isHello Andy- Apple also has open source components within. https://techcrunch.com/2017/10/01/apple-open-sourced-the-kernel-of-ios-and-macos-for-arm-processors/
And people wonder why Britain voted to leave...
If the EU or any manufacturers using Android doesn’t like it, they should go and make their own OS and apps.. plain, simple and EASY, make your own and let google die.
One of the first thing that i do everytime i get new android phone is trying to uninstall or disable Google Chrome and Google Search.
For browser i always prefer Opera and Firefox
Dr. Chillo, 10 Jul 2018Andwaht about Apple? does EU push Apple for these kinda stuff too?I guess the difference is iOS isn't open source and Android is
I don't mind having the apps preinstalled, but we should've the option to uninstall any and all apps that are
