Earlier this summer, Lava launched its Smart 4 Plus smartphone featuring a pretty mediocre spec sheet, and the brand has now announced an even more affordable entry with the Lava Smart 4.
It retails for INR 8,500 ($90), but it also brings specs that showcase just how severe the global memory shortage is hitting entry-level devices. Let’s start with the display. Lava Smart 4 brings a 6.56-inch LCD with 960 x 540 px resolution.
That’s a 540p display with 168ppi in 2026. Outside of the low resolution, the phone comes with a 90Hz refresh rate and a waterdrop notch which houses the 5MP front-facing camera.
Next up, the chipset. We have the familiar Unisoc 9863A. A 28nm SoC, which was originally announced back in 2018. It’s been a staple among Lava devices, but that’s not the worst bit. The phone is equipped with a mere 3GB of RAM, which just sounds too little for anything.
As a result, Smart 4 is running Android 16 Go Edition. Regular Android 16 requires at least 6GB of RAM.
The mediocre specs continue with an 8MP main camera and a 5,000 mAh battery, which supports 10W charging. Thankfully, it’s USB-C.
Lava Smart 4 comes in Konark Gold and Ajanta Grey colors. It will be available across India from licensed Lava retailers.
ViaI don't think Google shares GMS licensing criteria publicly, only to hardware partners, so info about it comes from leaks and not Google themselves. But clearly GMS can still be licensed for Android 16 on 4GB of RAM if companies like motorola an...
It was officially reported a year ago or so that Android moved to minimum of 6GB and it was reported by Google itself.
It's from 2015. Last time I had phone with similar specs like these was S6 from 2015, which also had 3GB of RAM, but it had better chipset 🤣 and better screen 🤣 only smaller baterry 😜
