Huawei is launching its next generation of slab flagships – the Mate 90 RS is king of the hill and you can read more about it here and about the Mate 90 Pro Max here. In this post, we’ll go over the new Huawei Mate 90 and Mate 90 Pro – with 6.75” displays, they are smaller than the RS and Pro Max (which have 6.9” displays), but they are not small. What all four have in common is new Huawei-developed tech.
The Huawei Mate 90 Pro features a 6.75” LTPO OLED display with 1280p+ resolution and 1-120Hz refresh rate. This sounds similar to its predecessor but the new model features a dual-layer OLED panel, which is capable of a bonkers 12,000 nits of peak brightness.
The phone itself is a sandwich made from third-generation Kunlun glass to protect the front, a metal frame in the middle and a panel of nylon fiber on the back. It is rated IP68 and can resist submersion down to 6m. It also has an IP69K rating for protection against hot water jets. The display also works when wet, so you can use it out in the rain.
The new Pro is powered by the Kirin 9035 chipset. Huawei is light on hardware specifics, but it does say that the new chip is 20% faster than the chip inside the old Pro. The GPU supports hardware ray tracing and can render 31 million rays per second (though as far as we can tell, this number hasn’t changed since the Kirin 9030).
The phone can be configured with 12GB or 16GB of RAM and 256GB/512GB/1TB of storage. There’s no memory card slot, but the phone does have a dual-SIM slot and an eSIM. Beidou Satellite Messaging is available and can send messages and even photos back and forth.

Another upgrade is the 6,600mAh battery, up from 5,750mAh on last year’s Pro. Huawei says that the phone can play videos for 41 hours straight on a single charge. The battery supports 100W SuperCharge (wired) and 50W wireless SuperCharge – the 80 Pro did 80W wireless. Reverse charging is available, both wired (18W) and wireless.

The camera on the Mate 90 Pro is largely the same as on the 80 Pro. The 50MP main camera has a RYYB sensor and an optically stabilized lens with a switchable f/1.4-f/4.0 aperture. The ultra-wide camera has a 40MP RYYB sensor and an f/2.2 aperture. There’s also a color sensor on the back.
The telephoto module has a 50MP sensor (RYYB, of course) and a lens with 4x optical magnification, OIS and a bright f/2.1 aperture. This module can switch into macro mode and snap close-ups from just 5cm away.

Huawei kept the unusual triple punch hole design for the selfie camera (13MP, f/2.0 AF lens) and the 3D depth sensing module.
The phone launches with Harmony OS 7. It lets you share photos, videos and other large files remotely and, if you are nearby, you can use tap-to-share. The phone senses whether you are holding it in your left or right hand and when there is an incoming call, it will place answer and reject buttons on the right side.
The Huawei Mate 90 Pro is available in China now on vmall. The base 12/256GB model costs CNY 7,000 ($1,040 / £790 / €925 / ₹100,500). This is CNY 1,000 more than the Mate 80 Pro (12/256GB) was last year. We’ll include a pricing breakdown table for the other memory configurations below.

The Huawei Mate 90 starts at CNY 6,000, which means that it takes over the old price point of the Mate 80 Pro. It’s a step behind on the chipset and is powered by the Kirin 9030 that was used in the old Pro, while the old vanilla model had the Kirin 9020. So, the Mate 90 claims a 27% improvement in performance over its predecessor, but keep in mind that this is in relation to the old vanilla model. The Kirin 9035 inside the Mate 90 Pro is 20% faster than this chip.

There’s no 16GB of RAM option this time around, 12GB is the only capacity available. The vanilla phone does get the full range of storage, though – 256GB, 512GB and 1TB.
Huawei doesn’t list sensor sizes, but the hardware sounds almost the same as on the Mate 90 Pro. This includes the 50MP RYYB main sensor with an f/1.4-f/4.0 lens with OIS and the 40MP RYYB ultra-wide (f/2.2).
Only the telephoto camera is noticeably different – it still has a 50MP RYYB sensor but its 4x, f/2.2 OIS-enabled lens is listed with 88mm focal length, while the telephoto module on the Pro is listed as 90mm. And there’s no macro mode here. Still, this is a big upgrade over the 12MP 5.5x/125mm lens of the Mate 80.

The vanilla model uses the same battery as the Pro – it has 6,600mAh capacity and can last 41 hours of video playback. However, wired charging is slower at 66W, while wireless remains the same at 50W. The old Mate 80 had a 5,750mAh battery and the same 66W/50W charging support.
The Mate 90 upgrades to third-generation Kunlun glass (up from 2nd gen), but it doesn’t benefit from the dual-layer OLED tech like the Pro. That still leaves a pretty capable 6.75” LTPO OLED display with 1280p+ resolution and 1-120Hz refresh rate. Similar to its pricier sibling, the phone has a fiber glass back, plus an IP68 (6m of water) and an IP69K rating.

The Huawei Mate 90 is also available on vmall. There’s no word on whether either the Mate 90 or the Mate 90 Pro will be available globally, but the Mate 80 Pro did roll out to the global market in March (after a late November release in China).
