But no matter what you'll do, you just CAN'T put a proper camera sensor on your flagships.
You still use tiny sensors that are not able to handle that many pixels. And not only you use the same sensor again and again, but you also make it even smaller!
Just like you did with Z3. Which had the worse camera among the other flagships.
Why? because of the sensor size. All the other flagships have bigger sensors, and so can take better quality pictures.
HTC M9 is on it's way, and it uses a big 20mp sensor, (twice as big as Z3's) and on looks it has what it takes to be the best 20mp camera in 2015.
No matter what you'll do, you'll never be able to built a great 20mp sensor with this size. No matter what..

I have a ZR and i can tell you that Sony has a way of revamping their old (MP count) cameras later with some hardware changes and releases them to their "partners."
This new sensor is in the same spiritual category as the 6-lens, 13MP camera they released that went in the OnePlus One, the OPPO Finda 7, etc. This 21MP camera is something for other companies to use that will be a slight improvement over the older IMX135. Sony has a better sensor than this for their flagship(s) of 2015, seriously.

Just because it has a higher MP count doesn't make it better than the other more competent offers (from Sony itself), it just looks amazing on fliers and does help to sell the phone to the most gullible people.
In fact many even come here to deny what everyone can see (literally!). They even pull gems such as "Sony has a 20.7MP sensor hence the others are subpar" -- which pretty much reveals the truth about what they know of the matter.

When one says "imaging software" one should be careful, because these flagship Xperias actually have a Bionz processor coupled to the sensor (so it's more hardware processing than software itself).
I'm guessing they did a major revamp to the Bionz firmware in the Z3 and it really would have been nice if that (somehow) also got to the Z1 and Z2.
The bottom line is Sony went with the marketing temptation of having the highest MP count and the best features that look well on a flier.
The end result is they are taking a beating from other Sony sensors (with lower MP count) mounted in other phones.
The iPhone is a good showcase of how massive the issue is on the Sony side.

One has to wonder why so many complain for "no reason", but then one sees a photo inside a pub taken with a Z1 Compact and quickly realizes there is no amount of "Manual" that will get ride of the noise (I know it's a 21MP sensor), lack of resolved detail, a flash that does unspeakable things, amongst many other things that are just wrong with it.
I do agree it's nothing short of amazing for perfect daylight photos, but dude... you have real issues if you can't spot the shortcomings of that implementation!
-- And no, it's not the "fruity" one that is on the wrong end of the stick here.

they should make the image processing software better. i don't know if the camera has improved in the z2 and z3, but as an owner of the z1 the camera is subpar. images from both the front and rear are too noisy.

You should not really compare as it is subpar to xperias hardware...
All xperias automode shots are better than iphone6, only not in color accuracy, and IF that bothers someone ( though havent met anyone bothered in real life, only on this site) , it is easily settable by oneclick softbutton named custom Manual...

No flagship used Sony's 20.7MP sensor at the same time the Z1/2/3 had them. Sony has something better planned for their flagships, trust me. The curved sensor is on it's way, people...

They both have sensors made by Sony, but it's pretty clear something is wrong with one of them (and I'll give you an hint, it's not the "fruity" one).
Real professionals don't tweak just for the sake of it... they want results that match the amount of work invested in that photo. (READ: you know there is a problem when you have to tweak heavily just to try to match the result of an Auto mode of a competing product)

come on sony ! You are the manufacturer of almost all the sensors used by other companies and you can't make the best sensor for yourself ?!
Give us a new 1/2.3" sensor (the same size) but with less pixels which will result in bigger pixels !
And image processing.. you are competing with Nikon and Canon in the dslr department and you can't deal with samsung or apple cameras ?
I can't understand what are you doing...
